Permalink Would a neck like this be appropriate for my own guitar project?

I have been inspired to maybe do my own DIY guitar. I figured a good neck would be a starting point.

Can you mix and match a neck like this with a Jag or Strat? Do they have to be made in the USA bodies? Anything else I might want to consider?

Jake wrote a piece about this a few weeks ago. You'll probably find it under a Dobner Jakuar search. I believe that short scale neck will fit a Jaguar body ok.

Stratocasters/Jazzmasters are long scale so the bridge will be in the wrong place if fitted with a short sale neck

It says the scale is 22.5". I believe Jaguars are 24" scale, so this neck would not work unless you got a body that was not already drilled/routed out for the bridge. You could then place the bridge where ever it needed to be. Even if you were able to do this, there would be other problems such as the locations of the p/u routes as well as the the whole thing being out of balance.
This neck would work with a mustang or musicmaster body.

That neck is a 22.5" scale, which, will fit a short scale Fender body, Jaguar, Mustang, Musicmaster, DuoSonic, is REALLY really short. Most of the short scale Fender guitars have a 24" scale. Add the narrow "A" width of the neck on ebay, and you will have a guitar that nobody will want to play.

22.5" scale necks are child/student size in every way.

And Reverb17, the 12th fret on a 24" and a 22.5" neck is in the same place because of the number of frets. 24" has 22, 22.5 has 21. That's why they are interchangable.

The # of frets has nothing to do with the scale of a guitar.

The scale length is calculated by measuring the distance from the front edge of the nut,to the 12th fret, then doubling that measurement.
On the 24" neck, the distance to the 12th fret is 12".
On a 22 1/2" scale neck the measurement is 11 1/4".

They are not interchangeable without major modification to the bridge position.

I could be wrong, but from years of reading guitar forums I remember that Fender made their (vintage) 22.5" short scale necks compatible with their 24" scale guitars; they were like conversion necks. Recall that you could order a Mustang guitar in either 24" or 22.5" scale, and they didn't have to route the bodies differently.

This might help:

I know how to figure out scale length. I was just trying to inform you of the differences in these necks. What you said was false. A 22.5" scale Fender neck will absolutely fit a 24" scale Fender guitar. They came that way from the factory. Musicmasters, DuoSonics, and Mustangs all had a 22.5" option. Its a fact.

I mis-spoke about the 12th fret. I don't know what I was thinking. Math isn't my strong suit.

All of Fenders necks use the same math to get the fret spacing. If you start with a 25.5" scale Fender neck, their 24" scale is exactly as if you started with the 2nd fret. A 22.5" scale is as if you started with the 3rd fret as the first.

Read about it here.

Here's a picture of a 24" and a 22.5" side by side.

thanks for the replies. A lot of good info here. I see I am going to have to do some real research before doing this project. Maybe a 25.5 scale Strat project might be more appropriate first.
