Okay guys and gals, I have some questions for you and would really appreciate your comments and feedback. I have an hour commute everyday to and from work and sometimes I actually think! Today I started pondering on putting together a Rocky Mountain surf music fest. It's a dream right now, but I'd like to explore possibilities. Some things I'd like to hear from you all.
- Am I nuts to be considering this? Is it a bad idea? Is it a good idea?
- Any of you with bands who have played festivals, what were your experiences like?
- Would there be any bands on here interested in a project like this?
I have lots and lots of questions, but I'm just taking baby steps right now. Please feel free to pipe in with your thoughts. You can also pm me.
Thanks all.
Mike

It's a damn fine idea!
Festivals suck because they are too long, have little organization, too many bands, poor stage locations, very little thought put into them in general(people will show up and party!). I would suggest more of a "Surf Night" 3-5 bands, at a dive bar that caters to the types that would be into surf music(even if they don't know it).

The biggest challenge is the travel costs for the bands. Each band outside of reasonable driving distance would need $1500-$2k just for plane fare, then there's lodging, food etc...
I'd start more modestly, set up a regular surf gig. Monthly, bi-monthly or even quarterly. If you can build up a good following, document it and then leverage it to sponsors to start creating a festival. Learn the ins and outs of event planning.
Best of luck to you Mike. I wish I had the wherewithal to give it a try here, but I'm just not cut out for it.

Thanks Jake and Danny! I totally agree with starting out small then build from there. I'm going to do some more thinking about it and contact some club owners. Utah needs more exposure to this incredible music. I've been woodshedding, trying to become the king of the snowboard guitar. It ain't happenin'. That's where you guys come in!
