Permalink Playing Samples/Sound Effects in a Live Setting

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Hello-

I’ve searched the internet… this pedal may not exist, and if it doesn’t someone needs to build it!

I would like a simple pedal for playing sound files that I have added myself. I know the Boss Loop Station RC-3 does that, and I’ve tried it, but it’s way too complicated, plus I do not want, or need, a looper.

For example, in a live setting, I’m picturing at the beginning of a song playing a beach sound clip, or even a keyboard playing a single chord. Then in the middle maybe a something else. Simple, short, user-made sound samples or sound effects.

Does something like this exist?

Does anyone play samples now? Hands free? I don’t want to walk over to an iPod in the middle of a song! lol

Thanks,
Tom

We in The KBK have been using a Digitech Jamman Solo pedal for years to trigger our samples. It has worked flawlessly. We have an extension pedal that allows us to change banks by foot. But the Jamman Stereo pedal has this built in.

Before this we used an actual sampler. This way is much more conducive to live performance and maintaining momentum.

I use the same for all of our voice over stuff (we do not talk from stage. ever.)

Our drummer with my last band used an Alesis Sample Pad. It worked great from my perspective but he did all the ques so...?
I've never tried, but you could probably que it with your foot though a pedal would likely be easier for a guitarist.

The easiest way would be pick up a rack mounted sampler and then trigger it with either some MIDI organ pedals, or one of these type controllers:

http://lividinstruments.com/products/guitar-wing/

Once upon a time there was the JamBass, which was a long thin ribbon type thing that you stuck on the back of your neck and the keys lined up with your frets. I've just done a quick Google, but I'm not sure they're still in production.

How do these samplers work

Does the device need to be one-shot operation - doesn't need manually switching off at the end of sample.

Does it need to auto reload the next sample ready for manual execution.

What happens if a button is accidentally switched twice? Is there a quick way out of trouble.

I use a RC-3 and sometimes even it's big brother the RC-30, and I don't find it complicated. A big plus is that it has really big memory, so you can store lots of soundfiles.
The only problem is that you need an external foodswitch to scroll through the samples handsfree, when you want to play more than one sample per song.

Another way is to modify your guitar to fit an I-pad on it. It think Coco from Man Or Astroman has done that with his bassguitar.

In a nutshell, like the "engine" of a keyboard. Instead of coming with a bunch of piano/brass/string/wibbly sounds, it's just a bank of empty memory for you to record your own sounds to.

You then assign that sound to a note, and when you play that note on whatever controller you're using, it will play the sample.

You can set it so that a sample will play only as long as the key is being held down (for example, a note from an organ), or so that it will play the sample until the end from a single press (more suited toward a crash cymbal). Most will let you adjust the decay rate too, so it will peter off when you release the key, instead of stopping abruptly.

Most samplers have enough memory that you can load a bunch of them in and assign them to different notes simultaneously.

For example, you could set it up for C to be the sound of gentle waves, C# to be a crashing wave, D to be ambient noise of people frolicking on a beach, E to be a police siren (for Squad Car) F#, G# and A# to be noises from a reverb tank being kicked, F, G and A to be recordings of someone shouting "Wipeout!", "Point Paniiiic!" and "The Je-e-e-ester!", and so on.

It would basically be setting up a custom drum patch, but using these surfy sounds instead of C = bass drum, D = snare, D# = rimshot, F# = hihat, etc..

If you catch it a second time, usually it will start the sample from the beginning again. Some may allow you to set it so that a sample can't be replayed again until it's completed its initial play, but I can't say for sure.

The Digitech JamMan is the pedal you want if you don't have any free hands on stage.
In my last band we had a LOT of samples (some songs contained up to 30 different samples - one shots and loops) per song.
IMO and if you have some free hands on stage, I'd use a Mac with a little program called 'Back to basics'. You can assign your files to keys and save those setups for each song. There are also similar programs for PCs if that's what you are using.
Speaking 2015: there are lots of programs that can handle samples for your tablet. Check out your app store, e.g. SPC - Musik Drum Pad for Android. Basically they work like the PC/Mac programs, you just don't have a keyboard. Hope that helps.

Another for the JamMan. I have the selector pedal as well.

I am not really sure what you find overly complicated about using a looper pedal.

  1. Plug it into the computer and load the wav. files you want.
  2. Use foot to select the bank you want to use.
  3. Engage main pedal to trigger sample.

There are other options though, such as what have been listed above. However, "Back to Basics", which we initially used, has a lot of bugs and, if I am not mistaken, is no longer compatible with modern Macs. This is why MOAM? no longer use it. Rob(CoCo) actually had a friend create a custom IOS app that he now uses in the Ipad he inserts into his custom base.

We also used to use a Roland SP404 sampler. ( http://www.amazon.com/Roland-SP-404-Sampling-Workstation-Production/dp/B000EMNPJC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1444147962&sr=8-3&keywords=roland+sampler) If I am not mistaken, it has midi in and out and could be fitted with a midi foot controller to trigger samples. However, now you are getting even more complicated.

There is also this, which seems to largely be a takeoff of what "Back to Basics" was doing back in the day.

Wow, some really great info here. Some really creative solutions as well. I've been madly watching videos and reading about all these different pedals. I'm going to rent a Digitech Jamman Solo from my local music store and give it a shot! Thanks for all the responses.

Tom,

Keep in mind that without the external switch pedal(sold seperately), the Jamman SOLO isn't really practical for stage use. The Jamman Stereo fixes this issue with having all the switches built in.

I used the Jam Man for a LONG time without the pedal, and it's doable, but a real pain in the ass. I got the selector pedal some time ago and have been WAY happier since! Only problem is that selector's pedalboard footprint... yuck.

Yep, we used this program after we got a new Mac and it works just as good as Back to Basics did on the old Macs. And you don't have to convert the *.wav files to system files any longer.

I went to the App Store and downloaded "Simpler Sampler". It works well for triggering samples from my iPhone. Not hands free, but it could work for triggering a sound at the beginning of a song.

Also, do any of you guys have any live footage from a gig that shows you using samples? I have a few ideas but I need some inspiration!

TeeJay ōjō

Here we go. Lot's of samples in that song. We were using a Mac and BtB and an extra USB extension cord for the Keyboard.
