Hi Guys,
Forgive me if I'm in the wrong area, I'm new and I'm English :-0 so there's my excuses over. I contacted Brian to let him know that I actually compose for Independent Film and Tv so I write in many styles to suit what ever the Director needs. But I've always been a huge fan of the American Surf Guitar sound. And I decided to write my own album called "Fir Tree Days" (album artwork hopefully is attached:) which is still ongoing, using that gorgeous sound in the process. Now I'm actually a Hammond and Keyboard player and all my work is played via keys, including drums, I tap them in with my little old fingers. So I hope you don't mind if I put a couple of links to my attempts here for you to listen to. You guys know what your talking about and as a musician I can't get better without peoples thoughts so I'll throw some tunes out there for you. I really hope you enjoy them .
The tracks are called
1. Goofy Foot
2. The Hunting Ground of a Fearless Cat Named Tigger
3. Goodbye To Fir Tree Days
Thanks guys for listening
Glenn

Welcome Glenn. Thanks for sharing, I liked it. There's definitely a micro-niche to be filled in the mellow-surf area. If you're not familiar, check out The Aqua Velvets, and the last Bambi Molesters album - As the Dark Wave Swells.

"With great reverb comes great responsibility" - Uncle Leo

I am now playing trumpet with Prince Buster tribute band 'Balzac'

Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta

Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party

Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF

Supertonesurf and DannySnyder thank you so much for your replies. And Danny thanks for the heads up on those bands I'll check them out.

Welcome to SG101 Glenn. I particularly liked 'Goodbye to Fir Tree Days'. My question with mellow-surf (good one Danny) is "does it take me somewhere?" Of the 3 that one got me to the beach with the sun comin' up behind me. Nice mix too.

Hi Glenn,
welcome here!

Nice stuff! Thanks for sharing here!
I like your stuff, it is very groovy.
Sounds very cool.
The 3rd song "Goodbye..." is my favorite.

All in all for me it is a bit too clean and nice (with the bells for example). Piano is good but do not play too clean also. if you would use a Bass VI instead of the kitschy piano in the "Goodbye..." song I would like it more.
I miss the "dirt" a little bit in your music. You use very nice strange harmonies sometimes?, this is good for my ears. Smile

AND your stuff reminds me to a "band" called Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. I guess it was studio project.

They also play a mostly groovy sound. AND they ad FUZZZZZZ guitar, Bass VI, surf guitar sounds, sythesizer sounds, Bongos, etc. ...
At last they have very simple song structures and a lot of their stuff sounds similar, but it works.

And an example for piano and surf:

Twang cheers!

There are some great possibilities here...especially "Goodbye to Fir Tree Days". But listening to it, I find myself wanting more melody to hang on to. It's a little ambient sounding...which is fine...but perhaps you could flesh out the very spare guitar figure some more. I'm glad to see Danny's suggestion of the Bambi Molesters. In particular, Fir Trees reminded me a bit of their Corazon Del Loco Jorge:

I know it's more Spaghetti Western than what you are going for, but it's notable for incorporating piano and organ with a spare guitar figure. Just something I thought might interest you. Oh, and welcome!

The Moon-Rays - "Ghouls Go West" and "Thrills and Chills" dip into surf a little, regardless they are good listening.

Ralf, Scott and Crumble thank you so much for your honest feedback. And thanks so much for the links and taking the time I really do appreciate it.
And I'm taking it all in. Now i'm going to check these tunes you've given me out. Thanks so much.

Welcome Glenn,
Very cool. I love Hammond organ stuff, including your countryman, James Taylor.
Here's some for the other SG101ers, if they are not familiar.

Any instrument that has a big data plate inside it with LUBRICATION instructions deserves at least an initial lesson.

spskins thanks so much for having a listen I really appreciate it. Yeah James can knock it out real nice met him a couple of times, nice guy and seen him play tons during the 90's as he did a load of small venues up and down Britain . Billy Preston was my guy on Hammond, man he made it talk to me. Loved it when he was with Clapton. And yeah I'm lucky at the moment to work as a composer, just get a little tired of looking for new jobs every week or couple of months depending on project lengths. But that's just me bitchin" ;)
And Badger I agree when I had an A100 and told I must lubricate regularly it was an eye opener Smile
Loving the SG101 site too, I'm getting to grips and moving round listening and loving every bit of it !

Glad you're enjoying it. Feel free to engage in the Surf Musician area as to approaches to songs, ideas & stuff. Alot of folks focus on gear (mea culpa sometimes) but there are some compositional monsters as members here and I personally learn alot in that particular sub-forum just reading, shutting up, and practicing.

Surf on!
Smile
