Samurai — maybe you can try a better quality arm? I use a 5mm arm from a Squier Classic Vibe Strat (one of Squier's best series) and the fit is perfect. I imagine it's much cheaper and much easier to find than an original Yamaha arm.
Thanks - I will search for another arm cause this slackness is irritaing(

Could not find the discussion on yamaha sgv300 - keeping in tune
While hard using the vibrato arm on scene it goes out of tune pretty quickly
I've polished and greased with graphite the bridge and the nut and the problem stays on
Tuners? what do you think?

If you have tuning issues check the tremolo unit. Especially the movement of the tailpiece, it must be smooth and solid.

Check the nut again. Is there enough space for the strings inside the nut when you move trem arm?
I once had an issue with a SGV nut. At last there was a superlittle dust piece in the nut under one string... I cleaned it and that`s it.
To the trem unit: The upper part (where the strings are inside) has to stay parallel to the body.
I mean the tail piece. (In the manual side 9!)
check this:
http://download.yamaha.com/api/asset/file/?language=hu&site=hu.yamaha.com&asset_id=9997
Normally You can use the trem with heavy abuse without detuning.
Keep us updated please.

thanks!!! will try tremolo tuning
And what about machine heads? Are they ok or worth changing for some locking ones? I had similar problem with my Bigsby-eqippped Gibson SG and it disappeared only after changing the stock tuners to locking Gotoh ones

Tuners are never the fault of tuning issues unless they're totally crappy. SGVs tuners are just fine.
Just take care when you tighten the string that none of the winds overlap.

If your strings are going out of tune sharp# then it's probably the nut slipping and gripping. I had a similar problem with a Chinese made guitar with a nut cut for 9 gauge stings while using 10 gauge, I finally bought a set of Japanese nut files (some pain for my pocket)filed them through carefully and adjusted the string tree for less tension. fixed!

It looks like this thread has morphed into one for players who've already found and purchased an SGV. What about us joneses? I'm still looking. What I see is Chinese guitars of recent make – EGVs – going for close to $500 (what crap!), compromised 80s SGVs going for $700+ and 60s SGs for as much as original vintage Mosrites!
Why are surfable weird guitars in such demand when no one but us apparently even know what surf music sounds like? One guy posted a Youtube video of "Yamaha EGV Surf Guitar!" and played Van Halen riffs with no negative comments – until I posted!
So you can tell I would like to get a Japanese SG/SGV sometime soon, and not be expected to pay Mosrite prices for it. Any help out here?

Don't even bother to find a 60s SG, grab the first SGV you find in a reasonable price.
I bought mine in mint condition for under 500 euros.

Euxapicto, Spy. Now can someone here sell me one?
What do you think about this one
now for sale on ebay?
SOme joker put a blade humbucker in the bridge position, significantly compromising the original design as I mentioned before. For Van Halen riffs?
Is it a good deal in such condition?
What would be a good retrofit?

parakalo!
The link doesn't work but I wouldn't recommend an SGV with not its original pickups as the whole SGV sound is over there!

There's a couple on eBay UK for £500. Are they really worth that much?
I've looked in eBay's "Sold Items" listings a few times before and seen them go for peanuts money.

They're great guitars and the quality is outstanding. They worth much more than 500GBP but it's true they were sold for peanuts a few years ago, like Jaguars and Jazzmasters before Sonic Youth.

I'm chiseling the seller; so far he has budged only $30; I am asking for $55 off, essentially free shipping. For $70 Bob Brubaker can remake the pickup, maybe bring it back close to stock. I hate 'modders' who don't understand the design intent of the original.

There is a sparkle green sgv300 in France for 350€.
I think it is the good price. Those yamaha are good guitars. Not for every music style, but great for surf music. With a little patience you could find one under 400€.

The sgv line is from the year 2000.
And the 60's SGs are way cheaper than original vintage mosrite:
in 2015, between 700 and 1500$ on Ebay/Reverb/OSG forum
and between 300 and 750$ on Japanese auctions^^
The prices are a reflection of the state of the guitar and missing pieces (trem arm, case etc...)

Is the SGV 300 significantly less fancy (therefore cheaper) than the SGV 800? Prices for these guitars seem to me to be all over the place, irrespective of condition. Maybe the descriptions are just too vague t be able to tell what's wrong with this one or that.
I would prefer one in very good, original condition, esp w OHSC. I have purchased too many guitars to get into another seriously worn or compromised one.

Most guitars that spike in price do so under influence of some famous player. I can't think of anyone famous who plays there so what is driving the prices higher every year? Is it just that that have been undervalued previously?

The yamaha sgv300 was cheaper than the sgv800 (45000yens/80000yens).
The specs are different: the sgv 800 has a bind neck with an angled headstock, locking Sperzel tuners, perloïd pg and different pickups ( Alnico V soap-bar style pickups vs Ferrite single coil pickups/Original Single Coil (Ceramic)).

I'm going to hold out for a SGV 800 in good condition. I can wait and I can afford the extra couple hundred bucks.
