I finally picked this 2 cd comp up ,its epic.....only a few copies left on Amazon I think.I sat down and listened to the whole thing, then made my wife listen to some too!
I need to break out my 'Hava Nargile' Turkish psyche comp to mix with this...

It's great to see people on SG101 discovering Omar Khorshid!!

I recall an Egyptian surf guitar player (obvioustly not Omar) in the annual Balboa Island Parade. Anyone else attend, remember?

Happy Sunsets!

Check out last week's Surf Guitar 101 show on North Sea Surf Radio for not one, but TWO Khorshid tracks! The show will be rerun tonight at 6PM PST.

Cool stuff!

A quick note on what I hear when I spin these discs.

I entered in to this open minded with no real expectations.

Do not expect a shred master or a blues demon, this player is very unlike western guitarists.

The drumming on this music is to my ears top notch. I assume these players are the wrecking crew of the studios in the Near East.

Keyboards seem to have a good deal presence on these recordings. I am not complaining. There is a broad spectrum of sounds here. Wheezy slightly out of tune reed organs, B3 sounds, Farfisa and Moog are all represented in these recordings. All well played to my ears.

The guitar is a precussion instrument, a melodic solo instrument and a backing rhythm instrument. Reverb, echo, and what sounds to me to be a Maestro Phaser with the big colored buttons. It's not the scales of Steve Hillage, Blackmore or Beck. It is it's own thing.

The songs from trad folk sounding bits to purple microdot tripouts bring me joy as I listen. I hear Deep Purple, funky movie scores and lots more packed in these discs. My wife just got aggravated and made me turn it off when I played it for her.

You can't please them all.

I finally got my copy and haven't even listened all the way through yet. But I'm sure I'm going to dig this. This is so cool. Mentally I am transported back to some smoke-filled hip Egyptian club in the early 70's. Exotic drumming, excellent and mesmerizing keyboards, and that magic guitar!

The packaging and booklet for the liner notes are excellent. Lots of hip photos are in contrast to how surreal and bizarre his last few years were (assassination attempts!), culminating in a strange car crash.

Omar is top-notch but if y'all like this you should check out the Shadow Music of Thailand compilation. There's a Pakistan instrumental compilation that's pretty good too.

I 've had this 2-cd Omar Khorshid set for the past year or so, it's pretty great! Hey El Monstro, does the 'Shadow Music of Thailand ' have guitars innit?

That's for sure, it's the other way around at my home. Omar Khorshid, Anandar Shankar, The Bollywood OST's etc. is very much appreciated, the classic surf guitar stuff. well!! Confused

"Shadow Music" refers to The Shadows so that's a definite yes.
