I've been eyeing those since they announced them.
I'll have to decide between that and an Aviator Gold head..

Almost there

Cheers,
Jeff

From two or three touring band video interviews I've seen they all like the direct out feature, or rather they talk about how much the sound man appreciates it! It looks like the Mini 101 doesn't have that.

Interesting!
I like the 'surf' setting Smile

Tone Block looks like an answer. 200 Watts, direct out. $100 more.
These amps do look sweet!

The Mini actually provides much more eq/voicing control than the larger Tone Block, which only has a control for mid-cut/low-cut. It also has an effects loop, the Tone Block doesn't. My Tone Block requires outboard eq in front of it to compensate for its dark voicing in my setup, which includes pretty bright speakers. YMMV...

I've received my 101 Mini yesterday. I tested it at home with a 12'' JBL K120 in a open back cab and my Surfy Bear. Very cool! It responds well to pick attack, sounds good with volume turned down and goes well together with Surfy Bear. Next practice will show how it works with a tube reverb unit.
That little amp is extremely loud. Even in 1 Watt mode it is almost too loud for an apartment building.
My first impression concerning the tone controls:
Tri-Q shapes the ratio of bass and low-mids
Hi-Cut controls hi-mids and treble
With the voice switch you can control the rough shape of the EQ-curve and the bass response to some extent.
I'll need some time to get used to this tone stack concept but it seems pretty versatile.

Headphones out is OK but nothing special. It can be used as direct out as well.

The send-side of the FX-Loop serves as direct out.

Voices: My faves are Tweed and Lead. Lead works pretty well for surf and delivers a good amount of drip with Surfy Bear on palm muted notes. It has a dirty timbre if desired, what is nice for me as I don't like super clean sound.
The Surf setting is a bit too bass heavy and too clean for my taste, which is not a big issue and can be cured with an EQ-Pedal and/or booster/overdrive in front of the amp.
I'll take the amp to the next practice and run it with a 15'' speaker in a tone ring cab and a tube reverb unit.

Wow--looks promising! Also looking at the Aviator 8. Either way I'm gonna need a box with a 15!

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

I'd like to hear from players how Quilter amps compare to our more cumbersome and delicate tube amps. Do they perform in an very different way? Do they lack for anything in comparison to tubes? Do they produce 'classic tones' and have 'touch sensitivity' comparable to tubes?

I've seen Quilter amps on a couple stages and recall how 'smooth' the Micro Pro played by the engineer's brother sounded.

Squink Out!

JObeast, I got the amp yesterday, so my experience is rather limited.
What I can say is that the Quilter sounds way better than my 64 Bandmaster
at low volume.
So far I don't miss the tube technology by no means. The touch sensitivity is there and it doesn't feel that different compared to tube amps.
But maybe some long-term Quilter users can give you a more accurate description.

You can definitely define amplifier warmth with a Quilter. It is abundantly plain to the ears from the moment you plug-in.

My 101 Mini Head was delivered on saturday.
I'll return to this thread later after I have more time with it but so far:
Overall good impressions as to feel and sound.
I tried it with 4 very different 12" speakers, 2@ 4ohms, 2@ 8ohms and it was easy to make the head sound good with all four.
The EQ's work better than I thought they would
I was able to dial up a sound very similar to my Princeton Reverb
It's pretty loud but some of you volume = power/rock n roll guys and gals may want more...?
Keep an open mind when looking for "your" sound. The EQ's are effective enough to where you may end up using the Jazz, Tweed or even Lead sound for "your" Surf tone.
Sounded good with a 90's reissue tank.
Does fine with pedals.
My bad back approves. It weighs almost nothing.

To be continued

Cheers,
Jeff

As a Fender amp guy since the 60s, I am still somewhat amazed that, after many gigs now, I have switched totally to a Quilter Mach 2 Micro Pro for my gig amp (I run it through a Weber California 15"). It gives me everything I want - deep, clear, strong headroom, nice onboard reverb and trem...and a "Surf" setting, which I keep it locked into! I still have my two Showman amps, but this thing is outstanding.

Hum. . . . interesting amp.

Would be interesting to read more reviews of Surf players on it, preferably compared to other solid state sound emulating amps like Fender Mustang.

So, let's say you have a need to run directly to a PA - am I understanding that there is no way to do that with the mini? I'd really like for one of these little units to work for me (I like everything else about it) but there are often times where running through a PA is desirable or necessary. What then? Sounds like I need to consider ruling out the mini and instead consider the toneblock 200?

Looking forward to additional reports from those of you who have hands on experience with the mini.

You could use one of these:

or a copy or similar to save money:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1NV1N07102

and the cool thing is the 101 is supposed to be able to be run without a speaker load so this would work for "silent" output, no speaker at all.

Jeff

Can you dial in amp sag (simulate rectifier tube compression/sag) with the Quilter?

That is the one thing keeping me from jumping on the Quilter ship. I always think the rectifier tube is the soul of a tube amp and with the Quilters response seems too fast/stiff/sterile for me. Maybe I should actually try one in person instead of relying on youtube.

Mini 101 has a line level out. Here is the relevant part from the manual:

I can't speak for the Mini 101 but the MicroPro Mach 2 has a Limiter control which is said to deal with compression/sag. Video

Hey Jeff - I know it's only been a few days since your last report on the Mini but was wondering if you have had time to spend with it since then and if you have any more in the way of a review to pass along. I've got a serious eye on this amp. I have a single 15 inch cab with a Jensen Neo speaker that might pair nicely with it.
