Nice, I had recently started to wondering when the next Sundazed Dick Dale reissue would be out and now we get 4 albums on the same date!

No kidding--that's gonna be a great (and expensive) day.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Where can the pre-Wedge "A Run For Life" be found? I didn't see it mentioned on any of the reissues there.

It wasn't on any albums - it was recorded on the Del-Tone label, and never released on an LP, only 45. It's on his "Better Shred Than Dead" comp, and several other comps. It might be a bonus track on one of these reissues.

"A Run For Life" is a bonus track on Sundazed's "Surfers' Choice" CD. I got this CD last week finally, and have been enjoying it since. I think it's definitely Dick's best overall album, most creative and most vital. One small disappointment: absence of the single version of "Shake 'n' Stomp". They have all the other Del-Tone surf-related releases as bonus tracks - except that one. (It was the flip to Jungle Fever, an early version of the song later titled Surfin' Drums.) A real missed opportunity. Also, the sound quality is a bit shaky throughout the CD. There are moments where the high end disappears. Well, I guess it was a pretty rough recording even back then. But Dick's guitar sounds huge (and most of the vocals are tolerable)....

Speaking of, Dick continues to deny that he used reverb on Surfers' Choice. I decided to listen honestly, with no agenda. But I hear reverb. It's most obvious at the very beginning of Surf Beat. You can really hear the booch on the muted intro. Now, I suppose it's possible that it's just the room reverb - I can't completely rule it out. But it doesn't sound like that. If you listen to Let's Go Trippin' and a few of the bonus tracks, like Del-Tone Rock and Jungle Fever, there you can definitely hear there's no reverb - and his tone is considerably rougher around the edges as a result. But on the tracks on the album, there's a smoothness to the tone that seems to me came with the reverb unit. And damn, I just HEAR reverb all over that! BTW, Surfers' Choice was released in 11/62 - only a month before Pipeline. According to everything I read, Dick had a prototype reverb unit in his possession before everyone, and given that reverb units appear in the '61 and '62 Fender catalogs, I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't have been using it on those recordings. anyway, just something that's been bugging me a bit....

I'm really looking forward to the upcoming DD reissues - God bless Sundazed!! (Where's Rock Out - Live at Ciro's??)

Probably due to ageing master tapes. I have the vinyl album and can't remember any loss of high ends.

I assume Rock Out will be released later together with the earlier announced rarities disc.

The Wedge was not stolen from anyone. Dick lived at the "Wedge" brought in the first surfboard, surfed it successfully and the thrill he got from riiding it, inspired him to write about it. Although he says it was stupid to surf there, he did it. The "Wedge" was written 61/62 time frame. I know he's my best friend and although I was quite young then, I was there and remember it well, it was BITCHIN!

Do you have that "Samurai Surf guitar" CD Ivan? I think you wrote a review of it - if, not, it has the whole (i think) Live at Ciro's lp on it. I was a little disappointed in it - although there are several cuts that stand out, and I like hearing how D. D. sounded live in 64 (or '65, I don't remember when it came out)

SSG's an interesting collection. I couldn't get into the Ciro's album, aside from "Angry Generation." "The Tiger's Loose" has some jaw-dropping stuff on it, though. (IMHO)

Has anyone picked these up yet? How are they?

are they in the stores?

They were supposed to be released this last Tuesday, May 22nd.

Tomorrow when I go up to Hollywood to meet the Lava Rats at the Tiki Ti,
I'll stop by Amoeba and see if they are in yet.

All four are now available on Sundazed's website but I noticed that for example Amazon has a June 12 release date listed.

I listened to Surfer Choice while I was waxing my car yesterday. It has some live recordings from the Rendezvous Ball Room days. This may be DD at his absolute best. Simply brilliant.

I just spent about $90 at the Sundazed website - thanks a lot guys Laughing Wink

I've been waiting for these for most of my adult life to finally get issued!
