Lotsa great film, fun. Thanks for taking & posting UF! Clearly the place to have been on 10/23...
Don't know Ralph, but I have to imagine this was quite a special night for him. Way cool of Dusty / Steve to make it happen too!
Oh, and would love to see more of the Worms & Ghastlys from this night if there's any more footage - they were both "gettin' it" too.

Right now he Ghastlies are my favorite band. Too bad they broke up before I even moved to LA!
I'd really like to see some young bands picking up on the ghastly way of surf-rocking. Are there any very young surf instro bands picking up at all? I know America is a very hard place to make art or music and that surf/instro seems to be a gentlemens game. But without a punk edge the scene misses a lot.

Yes, they're just little kids. I was talking about kids in their 20s but to hipsters "surf" means something unrecognizably non- instrumental.

We're not teenagers anymore but BOSS FINK is trying to keep the energy and spirit alive!!! 
The clips from this show are really hard to watch! Garrett was gong out of tune a lot here. It was one of our last shows together and the performance and attendance was so-so. We played way better shows than is!!! Our draw in L.A. was quite good and we sold a few records, but when all is said and done there's not enough appeal and enthusiasm to keep it going for real. Don't quit your day jobs to play surf people! We didn't!

So, Norm, did the Ghastlies play steadily or sporadically from the mid-90s to 2010? I picked up A-haunting We will Go-go CD at Amoeba in Berkeley around 2005 for real cheap and now they are collectable. Funny how no one appreciates a band in full swing.

We never played that steadily, but in the mid-90's we played regularly, around twice a month in L.A. There was a great scene in L.A. in the mid-90's centered around Tiger Mask shows put on by Ralph Carrera. It was not all surf, surf, surf. Ralph did a mix of Garage, surf, rockabilly and western swing and the shows were very popular with younger people under 30... around 300 to 400 or more person draw at every show. But by the year 2000 the interest in surf and other retro scenes pretty much died off again almost completely. In 2005 Myspace brought back an interest back in The Ghastlies thanks to Tiki Tena encouraging us to do a MySpace page. We got together, did some shows in Japan and England, sold a bunch of CD's once again, but it seemed to not last long and we hung it up for the final time.

So here we are the few left with an abiding love for a music which in ots inception was written by and for kids, most of us now a half century old. Are we crazy or has the world gone crazy in a really boring way?
Like, Instro music is now the exact furthest point from mainstream, which is all about posturing 'vocalists' with no real musicians backing them, just 'groove producers'.
Eventually, when we're dead, they will unearth all this rad happening music made before WWIII broke out and all the groove producers suddenly died.

I wouldn't overthink it. Surf is really just instrumental Rock & Roll. And Rock & Roll was teenage music from the get-go. The best Rock & Roll has that teenage energy, as far as I'm concerned. You play it to have fun. And if you're not having fun, don't do it! No one is going to conquer the world or cure cancer with it. But if it makes your life happier, then you are better person for playing and listening to it.

In the Summer of '96 when the Ghastly Ones formed I was 31 and Garrett was 29 maybe 30. Hardly teenagers!!! Haha!! But we tried our best to sound like it!!

Norm, I know it's tough when you've got a new project going and the excitement is flowing, and people keep bringing up the old project. I've told you how I feel about Boss Fink. I will say that the Ghastly Ones will probably always be my favorite surf band. Not only for the music, but for the vibe as well. I basically flew out for the convention in 09 to see you guys play. I'll second Jeff in saying , and I will always cherish this picture
Someday, when y'all are shooting the bull and someone says "we should do a reunion tour!!!!", just roll with it, please???
Luckily, I've managed to talk my guys into playing Hollywood Nocturne, and possibly Yuzo's Twist. If you ever find any of the pendants hiding in the garage, hit me up. I could use some stage flair.

That paragraph is a great summary of how I feel about instrumental "surf music" Frankly I cannot name any genre (outside of instro surf, tiki, "vocal" surf aka 'the California Sound', etc etc) of LIVE Music. Kudos to all the double (and triple!!) picking by all the surf guitarists, (and rhythm and bass guitarists), and so many drummers who just dive in head first! and in the end we all go nuts from it!!
__I've been a fan from when I was that "teenager", Norman. Still have all my first wave 45's, and I cherish them. Now I'm 63 years old, and for me, instro surf amazingly still turns me on so much; I'm not a musician, but like others here, I cannot "get enough" of instro surf LIVE!! Again, mucho gratitude to all of U, all of "us", man .... the whole scene!! Plus with the live streaming nowadays, one can be a "part" of that particular show, it's reaching more and more folks. Watching all of this, and in some cases, participating in getting the word about the genre, and of course getting the 'sound' out there, rewards us with more mudic cannot be played st the moment, for whatever reason(s). I find us to be a 'tireless' bunch of "we can't get enough" dudes/dudettes fans. It still amazes me how instro surf just brings us so much (live) joy and excitement, and also unites us -- from all over the world!!
I find that instro surf is on a steady (don't really know that word!) climb away from 'cult' ..... and towards a level where the hard core fans (we could go to a good surf show every night, I suspect! MARTY I miss U!), the 'occasional' fans, the 'curious' fans -- know the music but have never seen it live (which applies to SG101, Surfer Joe in Italy, North Sea too), and they can leave the concert a true "fan" -- is a wonderful thing. I've been hooked on a feeling!! I immediately became "a Fan of the genre from all the way back" after hearing those dripping wet tunes from the first wave ...... yeah it happens obviously quite often since those :"earl!! Instro surf has held my attention ever since I heard those first wave anthems (Mr, Moto, Misirlou, Let's Go Trippin', Pipeline, Penetration, Surfin' Bird, Wipe Out), etc. So here's a shout-out to BJ Thomas [& Blue Swede!! { Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga!! } Love your energy Norman. To quote that last song, "I'm high on believin'. I can't stop this feeling Deep inside of me.". Precisely!!! Perfecto!!

Thanks Will! Always appreciate your enthusiasm and support! A Ghastly reunion is just not in the cards. I do appreciate it but I don't have any desire to do it, nor the time. Neither does Garrett. Garrett is gone year round on Walking Dead, so rehearsing isn't an option. But frankly, I want to do something new, not live in my past. Boss Fink is going over really well and I'm stoked by the awesome response we've gotten. Big things are brewing in 2016 for Boss Fink. I'm having too much fun with it to focus on anything else.
