Permalink New Susan SurfTone interview in Huffington Post

Hi,
Avory here... here's a link to today's interview in Huffington Post with Susan SurfTone. Some of you will like it, some may not...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mary-pauline-lowry/susan-surftone-on-surf-rock-gender-and-taking-things-too-far_b_7968582.html

Very interesting, Susan never seemed to be part of the surf scene back in the day. I recall coming across her music every now and then, but there wasn't much online to checkout/sample.

I think the surf scene is just not as she, perhaps, thought it was. She mentions the surf labels, but there was Dionysus and Double Crown both of which had very few artists and didn't put out a ton of releases. I think how most bands how ended up on those labels was by getting to know the people that ran those labels. That is really how artistic industries work, networking and making contacts.

And moving to Portland and expecting a surf scene...

Ultimately, the music industry is bitterly unfair to women. Mankind, really... I do feel that many in the surf community would/would have been happy to have shared bills with Susan's bands if she had reached out. Male/Female/Transgendered/Gender Neutral the surf community is WAY too small to not help each other out when we are asked for help.

I've never heard of her . (not that Im any sort of surf scene expert)
If she wants to make it in the surf community I suggest she come play in SoCal and get active on SG101 to raise her profile .Being the queen of Albany is different from getting out there to the masses ,guitar in hand.
As far as being a woman playing surf ...if she's got the skills ,Id like to see her play. I dont care who she sleeps with . Can she write a memorable melody?

The heart of the matter.

Sonic aesthetics versus identity politics. I don't see how it matters what you got between your legs, what your partner has between their legs, or what your go go dancer was born with between their legs. All this talk of equality, and yet people are still so hyper focused on everyone's differences. It makes no sense.

Focus on the music! That's what really matters.

It's the difference between getting featured in the Huffington Post or not. They sure aren't interested in Surf music, only in the social angle.

Not that this site is the be all and end all of Surf music, but it's hard to understand how someone in the genre doesn't utilize the opportunity to post shows, releases, or just network. I think the best players in the world are here, and between what BTD and Lorenzo are doing world wide, Neils with internet radio,...I mean, THAT'S the real story....not who's being excluded from the scene.

And that is precisely what is wrong with the article, imo. Were I the musician in question, I would find it insulting that me and my bandmates' private lives made up 80% of the article about my new album. But that's just me.

I saw Susan Surftone during a tour a few years back. I found the lack of reverb in the overall "surf tone" to be a bit anathema. But there was a pretty good crowd (for socal surf show standards) and it was announced and promoted on sg101. I haven't seen much since. Perhaps a resource has been under-utilized by the band?

She blames her lack of success in America on her being a woman in a male dominated field, when really, it's the genre she has chosen. There are no surf bands that command the kind of respect she thinks she deserves.

She comes off as being quite angry.

Accusing the surf music community of sexism in a high-profile national internet feature is not a good way to endear oneself to that community - especially when it has absolutely nothing to do with reality. I predict that Susan SurfTone will not be playing the SG101 convention at any point in the near future - or really any shows with any other surf band that is part of this community. My strong advice to her would be to begin a very close read of this book at once:

... for a funny reason, i just have a bob dylan record on my turntable - i was not aware that the line "how to win friends and influence his uncle" has a poop-cultural background.

... AND i claim that my lack of commercial success as a surf musician is caused by the fact that i prefer gibson guitars!

Might be a curmudgeonly day, but I don't buy this growing trend these days of assuming some mantle of victimhood just because things haven't worked out. The list of phenomenal instro talent is long; those that have reached "the bigtime" probably alot shorter. From what I've read Kathy Marshall had pretty good chops & wouldn't have been on stage with the bands she appeared with just as a novelty - and people are still searching for any recordings. Possibly she had some interpersonal skills, appropriate to a young lady of the time, that didn't reflect a chip on the shoulder. Then again, I consider that HuffPo wasn't just going to consider things musically either...

No, I'm to blame. As a middle aged white male all the troubles in the world are my fault. I promise to try and do better. Stir the Pot
