Circle Saturday, August 11, 2007 on your calendars as the Fraternal Order of Moai proudly present the "Hot Rod Hula Hop 3, a tiki-tinged trip to the exotic island of kustom culture. It will be a full day event that includes a vintage hot rod car show, live SURF and exotica music, burlesque performances, vendors, as well as "professional DJs" Wink , and food and beverage services. The theme for this event, as is evident by the name, is a cross-pollination of vintage Tiki, Polynesian Pop and Cruise-in car culture.

OK...so who are these bands anyway???

First of all, we have the triumphant return of The Madeira!!!! Ivan and the fellas (yes...including the Patrick "the Human Freight Train" himself) will be returning with their unique brand of raucous desert surf from the millennia-old Mediterranean mysteries!

Coffin Daggers (New York), Spooky instrumental madness!

Fisherman (New York) Mid-Century exotica…complete with bird calls and vibes (and accompanyment by the ladies from Barnyard Burlesque)

Daikaiju (Alabama), Hard driving instumental rock and surf…with an influence from the Far East

The Heptanes (South Carolina), Lively rockabilly and psychobilly that will have them dancing in the aisles

Lucky 7 (Columbus, OH), Psychobilly/Rockabilly with a guitar player (jimmy vegas) who is a tiki carver extraordinaire!

The Hot Rod Hula Hop is returning to Largo's (same location as last year - 6159 Glick Rd., Powell, OH 43065).

For more info see: www.hotrodhulahop.com or www.fraternalorderofmoai.org

If you are able to make it in a night early, kick start the annual celebration on Friday, the 10th, at Columbus’s only Polynesian Restaurant and Tiki Bar the Tropical Bistro. The entertainment will be provided by New York’s Fisherman, a live trio of Exotica musicians with a penchant for mischief. Hawaiian guitarist Francis Llacuna will be performing on ukulele and slack key guitar. Hula dancing will be provided by a true island goddess known as Leilani. The all you can eat buffet includes roast suckling pig, shrimp pad thai, tropical chicken, vegetable lo mein and Mongolian beef! And don’t forget the appetizers, fruit trays and deserts.

Promises to be a good time!

Actually, the line-up is set for this year. We actually have more bands this year than we have had in the last two. This is an annual event though...and though it is a long way off, it is never to early to start thinking about bands for future years. Very Happy

That's a great flyer. Hmm, do you think Ivan could pull off "Happy Birthday" on his guitar? That might be a stretch... Hmmm Mr. Green

And as I was putting in my vacation days form, for that weekend, I remembered that I'd already paid for going to my 20 year class reunion (high school). No Hot Rod Hula Hop for me, this year...some classmates I haven't seen since our 10 year reunion. I'll cross my fingers, and plan to attend Hot Rod Hula Hop IV, however. Last I knew of, folks tend to not hold 21 year class reunions. Razz Rolling Eyes

Well, the Hula Hop was totally awesome this year. Loads of great music--The Coffin Daggers were great. I spoke with the drummer for a while after their set, and he was a really cool guy. They kept giving me free stickers, and I bought their two records and their CD, all of which are awesome.

The Madeira tore it up as usual. Their setlist changed a little bit since the last time I'd seen them--they played a few songs off the upcoming album that were just incredible. The only bad part was that it seemed like they had to cut their set short. Maybe the time just went by really fast, I don't know, but I wish they could've played longer.

Daikaiju went on pretty late, and I didn't end up staying for the whole set, but what I did see blew me away. They're all very talented musicians, and the kabuki masks are a great gimmick for sure. I just ordered their most recent (I think?) CD, and I'm excited to hear as much as I can from these guys. Check them out if you haven't already.

The other bands and acts that were there were entertaining, but those three were the highlights for me. Jet, thanks for introducing yourself. It was nice meeting you. Ivan, it was a real pleasure talking with you, Patrick, and Dane. For anybody who hasn't met these guys, let me just say that it'd be pretty hard to find a nicer bunch. Thanks a lot for coming out to Ohio. I had a great time, and I hope we can do it again next year.

thanks for the review - know if there were pics taken or better yet, video shot?????

There were lots of pictures being taken, and I think some video was shot too. I'm sure they'll all be posted somewhere soon.

I wish I owned some sort of camera.

daikaiju is very awesome. Check them out.

Thanks for the nice comments, Jon. The show was too much fun! Another great Hot Rod Hula Hop, without a question a big success. Probably 200 people there altogether, maybe more throughout the night. The organizers seemed very pleased.

We missed the first band, Lucky 7, as we took the opportunity to put in 3 hours of practicing both Friday night and Saturday afternoon (my fingers were hurting bad by the end of Saturday). The next band was the Coffin Daggers. I've seen the name of this band here and there, but I had no idea what we were in for. I was seriously blown away by these guys! They're a 4-piece (g/b/d/farfisa) from New York, playing hyperactive, dirty surf/garage/spy stuff. Among a multitude of great originals, they also played covers of A Shot in the Dark and the super-cool proto-surf of Stampede (originally by the Scarlets from '59). Excellent musicianship all around and tons of energy. For some reason, I didn't pick up their CD, and I'm kicking myself now. I'll have to track it down on the internet (though the current lineup is almost completely different than the one that recorded the CD, with only the lead guitarist remaining in the band).

Next up: Fisherman. mellow Arthur-Lyman-type exotica, with vibes, bass, drums. Competent and fun, but I must admit that I spent most of their set talking to other people at the show, and then getting ready for our set. By this point the show was running about an hour and 15 minutes behind schedule, but nobody seemed to mind too much. I thought we played really well, and we got a great response, though my wife told me afterwards that the sound upfront was a muddy mess, and the lead was not very audible. (Excuse the following rant: I hate soundmen and PAs. They never sound good, they're almost always too loud, making especially drums and bass too loud, too, and every time we play with a sound system in a club, I swear to myself that the next time we won't let them use it on us - but I never follow through. Ugh.) Well, maybe the sound right in front of the stage was good. anyway, we only ended up cutting one song from the set, so it wasn't a big deal - though we also wished we could have played longer! We played eight songs from the next album, four from Sandstorm, one Space Cossacks and one DD. All in all, we had a blast, and it was so great to have Patrick back with us. Ahu, the main organizer, loved it, and immediately asked us after our set was finished if we wanted to play again next year. The answer is YES!!

After some more burlesque (which took place between all bands, and most of which I missed), a West Virginia rockabilly combo Rumble Club took the stage. I saw the second half of their set, and it was very enjoyable. The last band of the night was Daikaiju from Alabama. They were a bit out of luck as they couldn't go on until 1:30 am (they were supposed to go on at 12:15). By that point the crowd had thinned some, but there were still surprisingly many people left. Daikaiju put on a WILD show! Kabuki masks definitely make the whole thing surreal. Though they are young, these guys can PLAY! I'm not sure if we can call their music surf without really robbing the label of all of its meaning, but there were definitely surf influences, as well as all sorts of other things going on. Some of it was very symphonic, some of it very hard-rock riffy, some of it very prog-jazzy, etc. All in all, they sounded very good, and I was impressed enough that I bought their CD before I left. My wife was getting really tired by 2 am, so we didn't stay through the end of their set, but the half an hour I saw was cool.

It was great to see several people from SG101, too: Jon, Midwest Surf Guy, Tsunami Tom (from Cleveland, there with his surf afficianado friends Nick and Neal) and Jet Sterling (all the way from Champaign, IL) - all SUPER wonderful people! How can there be so many in a scene so small??? I also met a guy by the name of Keith from Pittsburgh who was wearing a Slacktone shirt, and dragged his girlfriend from her brother's wedding (!!!) to come see us play! Wow. A brave man. Laughing

I only took a couple of photos, but I think the Fraternal Order of Moai (the organizers) will have a bunch of photos on their site soon. And Guy was recording the whole thing with his video camera, so some of it may pop up eventually.
