He doesn't sound too good does he, the poor fellow?

And the dignity side of having a colostomy bag and having to keep everything clean, especially with the energy he used on stage must be extremely tormenting.

Ivan,
We are all advancing in years. Each year, I kind of wonder if Nokie Edwards, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy - players from the dawn of rock guitar - will finally strum their last chord. All are bucking 80 years of age or more. Les Paul hung in into his 90s so I keep a good thought.

$3K a month just to stay alive - sheesh! And California isn't the cheapest place to live. That poor guy must have at least a $6K-$10K nut every month.
I remember his saying that he would want to "go out" on stage in an explosion of body parts. I hope he gets his wish - someday in the still distant future.

Poor Dick. All in all the dude has lived an amazing life. I am not sure why he is bothering touring though. He should be playing shows in an assisted living facility. How awesome would that be?

In a somewhat unrelated thought... it is okay to leave California to finder a cheaper life.

Only in America. No

How about some sort of Crowd Funding type thing to help him out?

give me 3-fingers of 1st Wave SURF

Dick certainly has great conviction and love for life and music. It is amazing what he goes through for both. I do hope things get better for him and his wife!

Bad news indeed! Go see him if you get the chance, he's one of a kind and no one knows how long he'll be around. Such a cool couple, I wish all the best for both! Thumbs Up

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

While not holding breath, it would be nice if some big med/pharma company (very quietly) simply took care of his supplies. Maybe one less PAC donation...

www.gofundme.com is the appropriate crowdfunding site. At first glance this looks like something we could do. Anybody game? We do all owe him.

Dick has a $250,000 Yacht for sale, we should not be crowd funding him. Crowd fund the 9 year old with cancer and no insurance.

I'm also guessing that Dick has many other assets to sell off. But if we see him selling of his guitars, then by all means start crowd funding. He is a man that had considerable wealth back in the day, and he states that he has insurance(even though everything isn't covered by the insurance).

Somebody should buy his boat though!

Well, it seems there's always two sides to every story.

Surf Guitar 101 time-share boat? Big Grin

I might donate in the form of getting that LP box set I keep thinking about. I wonder how much money goes to him. If I remember correctly he was quite in control of his music. I'd buy a shirt or anything if the money went to him.

Dick is playing locally here in Pauling, NY on August 19th at Darryl's House (yes, t-h-e Darryl Hall of "Hall and Oates") which used to be called the Towne Crier a few years back. Tickets are $35-$50 - a bit steep when you consider Los Straitjackets are playing there on August 8th for a mere $20.00.

It may be last train out for Dickers... maybe one last live listen.
Dick used to play at a great club in NJ called Joey Harrison's Surf club. Sadly, Hurricane Sandy took it out beyond repair. it was finally demolished early this year.

Guys and girls... learn, improve, listen, pick and play while you can.. nothing is forever.

So the message here is as long as he can still stand and play who gives a s__t. I didn't know being destitute and forced to sell any assets you may have acquired in a lifetime of hard work was required for crowd funding. Enjoy your CDs and t shirts. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who's at the show where he drops dead. That will give you something to talk about, won't it? I'm guessing none of you have ever toured extensively and have any idea what it's really like. Pretty tough for a man who's close to 80 and sick.

Monsoon,
Got a case of the morbids, there Monsoon??

Ever hear the old sayings "You can't take it with you" or "Life is just a slow death"?

Touring is probably fun when you're a kid.. it gets real old and real stale as you (hopefully) mature. Then again, Willie Nelson is at the 80 year level and likes to tour. And yes it's tough on an 80 yer old sick man.
But-
1. It's all he knows how to do - mostly. He's not going back to school to get a degree in hotel management.
2. Some guys like the road; get tired of it and go home; then get tired of home life and go back on the road. Repeat until dead. Roy Buchanan was of this ilk.
Dick once said he couldn't retire because too many people depended on him for a living. Perhaps that's also a factor over and above his health.

BTW - have you noticed that most people just aren't doing all that well in this wonderful Utopian society created of late? (like the last 7 years or so)

I was honored to see Ray Manzarek of the Doors, here in Hawaii, a week before he died. I was lucky, I got to sit on stage next to him. His demeanor, vitality and passion for his music gave no clue that he was so sick. Earlier, I saw Johnny Winter in the same theater. He slowly made his way on stage, made it to center and started power-ripping the blues, the way he usually does it. He played it, like it seemed there was no tomorrow. And there wasn't. he died a few weeks later. Again, he gave no sign that he was that ill. I was so thankful that I did go to the concerts and was able to see both men at their best. They both brought the house down, for an enthusiastic audience. Musicians have taken a career, that they do not retire from. They are passionate about what they do, and they do it til they drop. Because they love what they do. I'm 67 and I am stoked to have such a fine band of musicians playing with me. Don't be so quick to jump down your fellow musicians throats. We all feel compassion for Dick. He is my hero, I play left-handed and upside down because he showed me that's ok. We will all take this news in stride, and I am sure we will get something going for the man. Maybe some of the guys comments seemed glib, but it's hard to always say the right thing. PLease, turn this into a positive and go start that webpage yourself. You will find compassionate, fellow supporters.

Aloha to my Surf Music loving brethren, all of you.
