That Ohio band is pretty mediocre... But the FIDLAR band, they are part of a 'surf punk' movement that is gaining some steam. Is it surf... is it even punk? But the fact is that they are popular, more popular than every surf band on the planet at the moment(which sucks). They use the title surf in a song, they skate a lot, they surf, and were raised in beach culture. Pretty easy for the tag to be applied for them. Surf Punk is not surf music, nor do I think the band would say that. But, this is what kids of that demographic and culture are listening to. This is defining their youth. Lots of Pixies in FIDLAR, the Pixies being a band that had a strong 'surf' connection. Did you correct the people in the threads? Essentially, we are not popular enough to hold this genre amongst the entire population. I fear we are quickly losing more of a hold, how many bands tour anymore? Daikaiju? In the 90s there were a number of bands that regularly toured and released music, this left a mark. You still run into CDs, 7"s, and records of these bands. People now hitting 40 have fond memories of seeing these bands in college and instantly recognize this type of music. We have nothing like this for the current generation. We never played enough, we couldn't commit around work, school, health. Could we have made it work, yes. But we just didn't and this is probably because we were lazy/didn't care enough/cared more about other things in life. What would have happened if we toured 10-15 weeks of the year? I bet we would have found a label and found an audience in cities as we revisited them. I bet this would happen to any band that had the drive to get out there and tour behind their music. As much as the industry is changing, you still can't just sit at home and make a name for you, your band, or your genre. It just doesn't work that way. FIDLAR, and these other 'surf punk' bands are working their asses off and they are going to take the term 'surf' right out of 'surf music'. Not maliciously, but public opinion will see to that. |

I'm sorry Jake. I deleted my post not realizing you were submitting a reply. I was afraid my post was too negative and I tried to remove it. From what I remember my initial post complained that the younger generation thinks the term "surf music" means something entirely different. Users of popular sited like reddit.com and voat.co are posting "surf music" like the links below that don't have a hint of surf guitar. Apparently this is now "surf music": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9ngny-MAnY I am also afraid of losing the genre as it morphs into something unrecognizable. Last edited: Aug 05, 2015 21:51:31 |

Holy shit... Hey Ya... it does sound surfy... There is a ton that makes it not surf, but at times... Only only if I try to make it sound like surf. Porno for Pyros... no. I get FIDLAR, but am not going to buy or listen to any more of their music. And your post wasn't too negative. I read stuff like that on Reddit all of the time and then I remember that Reddit is a horrible place, just homogenized to hell... While there are people of all races, creed, and gender it's voice is still home to a white male demographic that does not specifically place importance on learned opinions. And honestly... I suck, people suck, everyone is wrong and stupid. To me, I know what I enjoy in my artistic mediums and I feel I am right. But... not to that dude I am wrong. |

Funnily enough, I really wanted to do a surf instrumental version of Hey-Ya at one time. — |

Hey Ya cover has been done! https://www.reverbnation.com/theredplanets/song/6539127-hey-ya-album-version But more on the topic, or what I guess is the topic, I wake up every morning and look at what's tagged as surf/surf rock/surf music on bandcamp. About 70 percent of it is way way off. — |

I like the overt and not so overt allusions to surf, particularly on the Bossanova album. Here is something interesting I saw pointed out regarding their song "Ana". The first letters of each line spell out the word "surfer": She's my fave, I've wanted to share this, but never had an opportunity so I'm doing it here since you mentioned the Pixies...kinda cool I thought. |
