How often do you FORGET to lock the springs down? Now I do that way too often. Last year on the way to Colorado for vacation and to jam with AquaChris and the guys, I neglected to lock the springs and had to listen to both the springs splash and my wife fuss about the noise all the way to St Louis from Atlanta. When we stopped for the night, I dug down under everything to get to that annoying tank to lock the springs.....yeah, it was on the bottom. (Murphy's Law).......ed

Yep, this one happened to me, too...drove about twenty minutes from a gig...the tank was at the bottom of the load, rattling away over every bump.

Well, the one in my amp is usually rattling away anyway - and when I had the Peavey Valverb that was very rattley and had no damping mechanism. It's been the soundtrack to my journeys to gigs for years. I must admit that the Fender does make a particularly high amount of racket if you forget though.... and forget I have.

I did it once not too long ago, and I believe I drove from SF down to San Jose clinking and clanking all the way there.

i don't have a lock on mine, so i get to hear 'em everytime im driving and they are still in my car. i dont really think its that bad or annoying.

I never lock mine, I know i'll forget to unlock it and wonder what is wrong with my tone until I remember. Getting old is not as cool as everyone says.

I borrowed one of WoodyJ's better obsessive complusive habits and always lock mine down. However, my Pork n' Beans don't line up too good in the pantry...

I would hypothesize that not having it locked down my break the springs in better, assuming that the theory that worn springs sound better.
My vintage Super Reverb pan sounds a billion times better than its accutronics almost replacement.
