I'm having some troubles working out the chorus to "cruel sea" by the ventures. I have a feeling I am over complicating it.
Is it played as single notes or double-stops?
Anyone have any playing tips for this part?

"The Cruel Sea" was written by Mike Maxfield, guitarist for The Dakotas, and first released in the UK on the Parlaphone label in 1963. The TakeOffs |

Good luck with the tune it's a great song. Just thought I'd post some videos of various version, including one by several SG101'ers, El Mirage. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I think Ron has it (just feel it), 'cause it seems there are lots of ways to play this. Some old wrist issues don't allow me to do alot of staccato picking so when I first learned it, I just arpeggiated the supporting chord formations in the chorus and played with different fingerings to get the vibe of the song. Aside: Ron is Blue Avalanche going to be re-released or is it available somewhere? Hey Waimea Bay, I was going to make a video for you, but it wouldn't be any better than this guy. (Also, I have been playing it wrong for so many years, I can't go back.) —Buy Endless Drummer @ Bandcamp |
