Permalink Good Surf Guitar with P90's and Tremolo?

New Topic
Goto Page: Previous 1 2 3 4 Next

Mosrite pickups are nothing like P90s. They are as hot as HB's but not as loose as P90s. Very different design and sound characteristic.

I really like the short scale of the Jaguar , but not its thin tone.
Lately I really dig the Mosrite P90 sound (probably affected by The Volcanos)

Please forgive my ignorance but if I put P90 shaped like Humbuckers into this abomination:

How good will it work? (Or maybe an SG will be more suitable)
How close will it bring me close to a Mosrite sound?

Cheers ,
Mark.

Why not buy a Fender modern jaguar instead ? these are cheap, with p90 and very good players.

Squink Out!

The only offsets that are sold in my place are blacktops and a special JM

Dude, buy a used guitar. What's the point of paying top dollar? Guitars are very durable and age well. They also lose significant value as soon as they leave the sales floor.

Never buy new. A used guitar is generally going to play much better, as it will likely have had a setup and things will have settled.

Lissen to the man. He knows from what he speaks.

What is that red guitar that Dave Arnson (of insect Surfers) plays? Is it a vintage SG or something he built? I seem to recall that it had P-90s and an whammy bar.
Now I see pix of a blue one too, on http://www.insectsurfers.com/band_photos/ .

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

Dude, buy a used guitar

I'd be glad to , but will you believe me if I told you that no one plays offset guitars in my place? It is extremely rare to find one being sold , thus I think about other ways. . .

Er. . . are they close to stacked humbuckers than?

I'm a newb here, can somebody school me as to why offset body's have become a key ingredient to making a guitar a 'surf' guitar? Confused

Well - They happened to come out when surf music was popular.

And there are some guitars with non-offset body and non-offset sound that are used in surf music (Stratocaster, for example). But they have a different sound from an Offset guitar, because...

... although the unusual body shape may be blamed for the name "offset", I'd say it's less the offset body than more the typical rocking bridge with low break angle, therefore less bridge pressure and ringing of the "secondary string" behind the bridge that makes an offset guitar sound so greatly offset-ting Smile

YMMV

This is to czech-one-2: I don't understand a 1/10 of what these guys say but I don't let it stop me. As time passes, some of it does sink in. Instinct has brought me here and most all my guitars are funny-shaped so, win-win.

Offset bodies have no relation as to why they have become a surf guitar. The visual aesthetic is one reason they are associated with surf guitar.

And let us remember Strats are very popular surf guitars.

Fender single coil pickups and vibrato are associated with surf guitar. They produce a sound unique to most other single coils and you find it all over most surf recordings.

No, Mosrite pickups are nothing like stacked humbuckers.

There are many different ways to layout magnets on a pickup and then different ways you can wrap the wire. These are what make pickups different. There are even different types of magnets material used.

Thanks Jake.

I guess I should leave my tinkering fantasies and keep an eye on 2nd hand posts. .

Thanks...that clears things up! Uh-Oh
Really, I do like weird, mutant-y looking guitars though. And I'm gassing for one of those new hallmark mosrite-y things. Too bad they aren't for sale in the EU.Heck, I'd sell my tele and Epiphone to get one! Cool

Thanks czech- now I want one too. Johnny Ramone model or whammy bar model, Johnny Ramone model or whammy bar model.... Oh the humanity....It's a battle of the genres!

Reverend Jetstream 390. I have one and it can certainly surf. I also have a Dipinto Galaxie 4 -- which has been fun, totally different flavors

I'd say your best bet is to try to find place to try stuff out first though. Buying a guitar without trying it first (online).... can be tough

A Friend of mine owns a reverend, great guitar. Just looked up the 390 - What does it sound like? Just asking because the bridge seems to be non-offset-style...?
