Tangent warning: I actually emailed Mike Robinson at Eastwood/My Rare Guitars a while back and asked him why, when revamping the Sidejacks, they switched from the Bigsby style trem. He obliquely replied, "Yes, we did." When I restated the question (pretty sure I was being put on anyway) I got nothing back. The new Sidejack models get rave reviews except for the trem...people like the old Bigsby style better. That's what I'd want.
From what I understand, Gretsch was going after some companies for using Bigsby-style knockoffs, which is likely the reason they switched to the crappy Burns trem.

Maybe that's why the Bigsby-style trem on my Eastwood Airline says licensed by Bigsby. I did try a couple of the burns style ones and was not too keen on them.

I believe the Golden Age of cheap guitars was the late 50s and 60s when cheap guitars were actually great guitars. Nobody is going to remember the cheap stuff in 10-20 years. It is all knock-offs of popular designs.

BigMike, you voice a timely question. My answer to it is another Dearmond (already have two, and really dig 'em). This one is an S-73, an SG like plank (though a bit thicker in the body and neck) with Goldtones, Dearmond's take on the old '70s Guild humbuckers. These happen to be very cool sounding pickups, bright and clear, but I'll probably try a set of Fralin P-92s or HD Z90s. I'm looking for something single-coil and P-90-ish at the same time. Anyway, that's the plan.
IMO, this is a golden age (OK, another golden age) of cheap guitars. Dearmonds are a case in point. I will remember this stuff in 10 to 20 years cause I'll still be playing it. Along with stuff from that other golden age. It's all good.

Having said that, I've got a latent jones-like thing for an SG with a bigsby, I think it's a great rock'n'roll guitar, I'll bet any Link Wray tune would sound killer.
i think i suffer the same malady: i just want to hear that p-90 SG roar through a Fender Tank and a Showman...I bet it would sound stunning through a couple of Bassman stacks, too!

What about an Epiphone Casino with a bigsby installed? They are much higher quality than most of what is being listed. They may not come stock anymore but they are very easy to install and the cost will still be several hundred under $1000.
the casinos are nice guitars...
so are the Epiphone Coronets...
as well as the good old Melody Maker...

I have a supernice eko cobra, made in italy, a '90s reissue of their '60s model. bigsby style tremolo and 2 seymour duncan P-90.

I really like the short scale of the Jaguar , but not its thin tone.
Lately I really dig the Mosrite P90 sound (probably affected by The Volcanos)
Please forgive my ignorance but if I put P90 shaped like Humbuckers into this abomination:
How good will it work? (Or maybe an SG will be more suitable)
How close will it bring me close to a Mosrite sound?

Yep, I'm not a pro surf guitarist but My EPI P93 certainly can cover that base. I needed some locking tuners and a new nut but it stays in tune perfectly now. Still using the stock pickups as they aren't the super hot ones [13k] that Epiphone puts on some of their p90 guitars. Mine are around 9.2k and sound fine.

I had a BOWEN HANDLE on an old Cimar Maruader copy. I LOVED that tremolo!
Felt alot like a Bigsby to me only had more travel in either direction. I still have the old Bowan handle and would love to find a gold hardware stop tailpeice P90 guitar to put it on. Someday...

Surf 90s are not P-90s. They are Dynasonics. They just use 90 in the name to trick people into thinking they are P-90s.

I got one of these in surf green. Used it on my last song (Surfer's Lament in the downloads. No I won't hijack the thread but if he wants to hear one...) and the tone was sweet. At 8 1/2 lbs it's got more heft than I'm used to (hollow Danos) but at this price you can't go wrong. I just went to the site and was able to add 1 to my shopping cart no prob. And Rondo has A LOT of other guitars. The poor man's eye candy.

Why not buy a Fender modern jaguar instead ? these are cheap, with p90 and very good players.
