What a blast it was this year! I will post my review when i have more time.
Meanwhile here is a video of the Blair Witch Project Band Very Happy which I filmed at the festival. I think the sound is quite good for a Samsung Galaxy S4. Enjoy!

Yes, I retract my previous impression of the still of JP - definitely rockin'. And John Blair is a rhythm monster as well; so cool to see these & meld it with what I was thinking as I listened on NSSR.

Cool

Many highlights of the Surfer Joe festival.
But I heard many people say the Jon n Ivan band gave them goosebumps or
Even tear up a bit.
When surf does that, it doesn't get any better.

Thanks to NSSR I had those goosebumps; transfixed with a laptop next to me cranking it through the stereo. It was something different, never experienced. Can't tell you what else was going on in the house during that time - nor did I give a rip.

So yes Sir, it doesn't get any better.

For those that missed the link.
Watch these, it will melt your face,
But in a good way.

I realized that We NSSR DJs don't need to do a show this weekend, so I figured I better do a review of the Surfer Joe summer Festival while it was still fresh in my mind.

Each Post will be a separate day.

Review of Surfer Joe Summer Festival, (and trip to and from)

1st of all, I must again thank all that donated to the fund to get me a computer, to do my NSSR show, and then the money after was to get me a ticket to go to Surfer Joe this year. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
It was an awesome whirlwind weekend, and the trip of a lifetime.

Wed. June 17th,
Woke up at 2:45 am after 2 hours sleep, OOOOOOOOF!!!
Off to go get my girlfriend Dorthy, and have my brother take us to LAX airport. She got her flight tix after me, so we weren't on the same flight. But supposed to land 20 min. apart in Pisa, Italy.
Well so much for that. My flights were delayed in LA by 30 min.
Chicago by 2 Hours, and missing my Germany to Pisa flight, I had to wait 4 hours for the next connection to Pisa. Getting me there at 4:30 on Thursday instead of 12:20. But it was still daytime, and I was at surfer joe to do my DJ gig no problem. But considering that because of delays, it took John Blair over 30 hours, and a lost bag for a few days, I can't really complain too much. But I am a big guy, and I don't fit well on planes. When I go again,I want to get a direct flight to Rome and then take the train up to Livorno. All of the changeovers and security, and customs at the airports is enough to drive anyone insane.

Ok now the fun.
Thurs. June 18th
I arrive at Pisa Airport around 4:30 pm and am greeted By Philipe
(Lorenzo's driver, pick up/drop off guy for the weekend) And Lisa(Niel's from NSSR girlfriend) and then outside Was Niels, and Sven from Bang Mustang. We hit the road for Livorno, along the road, we saw the
"ladies of the fields", ha ha ha. A little while later we pulled up to the area where surfer joe and the Aquarium are. Wow!!! Just the first glimpse of where it was had me excited. Then I walked in and Bam!!! total surf music emersion. I remember Lorenzo saying that he wanted to style the Surfer Joe after the Ruby's diners here in So Cal, well he did that, but way more surfy vibe, and tons of band show posters. So Cool. The pics, and videos can not capture the vibe as well as being there. And then there is the Ungowa tiki bar upstairs. I say Huge Kudos to Lorezno just on the feat of opening and running such a cool place in a non touristy town. He said that there is not really a lot of stuff for young people to do in Livorno, so its become kind of a cool hang out, even when bands aren't playing. After roaming around and seeing and meeting a few people, (some I knew and some I just met) all great people.
Ran and Marie and Jonpaul did their tiki drink seminar.very educational, and tasty drinks. Then I started DJing tiki music down in the courtyard area by the Tiki Stage. Then around 9pm I think.
The Dead Rocks from Brazil his the stage, great energy, great songs, original and covers, and really great hair,Pompadors to the moon, ha ha.
Then after that the Always fun and entertaining Surfer Joe, aka Señor Surf took the stage. The New line up was tight, and it was great to hear Lorenzo doing what he does bast, again. The last time I saw him, he was at SG101 in So Cal playing drums for the Kilaueas. The time flew by and his set was over. I DJed a little more after he was finished. and then I think at 1 am, or so, I was about to pass out, Philipe took Dorthy and I to our Hotel. We were bleary eyed, and wiped out beyond belief.
I think I fell asleep around 2am, literally 3 min. after I laid my head down.

Long crazy day, with flight delays, and all on little sleep, but it was
caped off by the beginning of a great weekend ahead.

Fri. June 18th (pre show time)
I think it was around 10 am or so, we woke up in a haze.
A tiny bit of a hangover, but mostly the effects of jetlag and also many hours awake with little sleep (I don't sleep on planes well).
There wasn't anything important going on at the Surfer Joe diner till 5 or so. So we used Friday as our day to explore a bit and take in the sights, tastes, etc. of Livorno. Admittedly we were not well prepared for what we were looking for. So we asked the guy at the hotel desk where a nice restaurant was. He told us the name and the directions, but with the thick accent I didn't really get it. I should have asked him to write it down. Anyways we hung a early left turn on a small street to find ourselves in a cool farmers market type street fair, and then on a hint from the Sine waves from England, we went into an indoor section of the market place. really nice meats n veggies and a few other things.
There was supposed to be a really good sandwich place inside, but we were kinda confused,& also looking for something a bit nicer, and sit down-ish. So we left there, roaming around the town kinda hap hazard. We saw some restaurants but most were closed.Lots of little cafes with small finger foods and espressos. So we went into one of the nicer one of those we saw. Then down the street just 100 feet we found another cafe that had these great little pastries and little fruit pies. We got some of those and bottle of water. and hit the sidewalk again.
We saw a few old churches, and cool old apartment buildings. Went into a few little stores, and did a bit of family shopping. And then started to head back towards the hotel as it was hot and we were tired. But as we got closer, we saw some really old walls, and buildings, much older and more interesting than anything we had seen so far. It was the area known as Little Venice, where Livorno has some canals, and there is a fort with angled brick walls, and a huge old church(I'm guessing to be from the 1600's) but not sure. We spent about an hour more taking pics and walking around the canal/fort loop, and then the heat and jetlag caught up to us. So at 2:30-ish we headed back to the hotel, and took a nap.
Woke up around 5 kinda rested, and ready for the night. Got ready, and took a cab to Surfer Joe diner.

Fri. June 18th (night show at Surfer Joe)

When we arrived at the Diner we went upstairs to the band merch vending room. A big square room between the aquarium and the diner with huge 20 foot windows on the front and back. So you could see out front and back of the diner. Lorenzo had arranged for a guy with a big ferris wheel to come and set up to ride, and a skateboard ramp for kids n young adults to skate on all weekend. He had a hotdog n drink truck out between the 2 stages. And there was a small bar about 30 feet away from the outside tiki stage.Things just kept on getting better and cooler. To top it off, its all on a plaza overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. So awesome, you couldn't ask for a better location. I remembered That I was supposed to be on the Air with Niels, on NSSR,so I ran downstairs to the broadcasting booth,on the small stage in the surfer joe diner. The weekend was such a blur, I don't remember what we talked about. But the hour flew past, and another co-DJ was up after me. So I left to go meet n greet with people outside before the show started. So many cool people. Some members from SG101,some DJs from NSSR, some just surf fans, mostly Europeans, but a few from USA and a couple from Mexico and Australia.

The Line up for the night was(on the small tiki stage)
Five Fingers with Parasol(spain)
Surf Flamingo(Spain)
and then Daikaiju(USA)
All were good, but of course with their over the top stage antics
Daikaiju, stole the night, and kinda left my mind erased of what the first 2 bands were like. Then Los Coronas took the Main stage.
I really really like their spaghetti western songs, and not so much their disco-ish songs, then they did some songs from tv shows and movie soundtracks that were ok. And followed by a cool cover of the Wedge by DD. And then a Morricone song as their finale. Sadly I missed this, as I was in the Diner talking to a travel weary John Blair. Hopefully somebody has the Los Coronas Morricone song video. Over all a very Pro band. But I wish they would do more spaghetti and surf, and less non surf songs. After the show, we hung around for a bit, talking to fans, and band members. Around 2:30 we got a ride back to the hotel and collapsed again. Great Day!!!!
Only more awesomeness to come the next 2 days.

will post more tomorrow night.

And here's almost half an hour of The Blair Pongracic Project in HQ video

Damn, not just HQ video but audio too.
Usually I can't hear the bass much on my iPhone.
That video has super clear highs and thumping lows.
