It all started in 1964 with THE DEADLY ONES "Monster Surfin' Time". This and Screamin' Lord Sutch were two major influences when we started THE GHASTLY ONES. BOSS FINK "R.P.M." available now from DOUBLE CROWN RECORDS! |

Yeah, I just saw that -- pretty creepy! There was a full moon in my neighborhood last night, must be something to do with that. Last edited: Jun 02, 2015 17:39:00 |

Don't quote me, but I think I heard there was some Mexican instro bands from the 60s that had Luchador masks. —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

did surf bands come up with the concept or did it exist in other genres before surf rock? —http://dinosaurghost.bandcamp.com/ |

Davie Allan and the Arrows had a sort of Robin Hood visual schtick going on in the early days. There's even a band pic with one time member Paul Johnson wearing the garb on the back of "Apache '65" Taking the theme even further, page 23 of the Surf Age Nuggets book shows a band pic of "Robin and the Three Hoods" in even more elaborate Robin Hood costume, complete with tights. |

That is an excellent question. What came before the surf & pre-surf instro scene? Bubble Gum rock? Rockabilly? Jazz? I cant think of any examples off the top of my head of any masked or quirky themed bands pre instro. |

It existed in other types of Rock & Roll before AND at the same time as surf. Prime examples are Screamin' Jay Hawkins in America and Screamin' Lord Sutch in England. Bobby "Boris" Pickett horror shtick and his hit THE MONSTER MASH in '62 played a big part as well, seen below performing with The Beach Boys.
