Permalink Yamaha SVG 800 trem question

New Topic

Hello all...just got my hands on a Yamaha SVG 800. Last night I went to do a restring (for the first time) and I'm having some issues with the tailpiece. I get it all strung up and tuned, but then the first time I depress the wammy bar, the tailpiece yanks off of its two screws. I am thinking I have way too much tension happening in the spring area (the guy who owned it before had super heavy strings on it).

Here's my main question: is the tailpiece supposed to be floating? I can use my allen wrench to get the tailpiece on, but it isn't very tight (if you want to yank it off, you can). Is that because it is supposed to float, or is my tail piece stripped? I will be attempting to re-do the tension tonight, but in my head I can't think of anything that is really holding the tailpiece on.

Full disclosure: I am used to owning guitars with bigsy and jazzmaster-style trems, so this is a new design for me. Just want to know if the problem is with me or the guitar. Thanks!

No, nothing is supposed to be floating. The tremolo works as a normal tremolo.

From the SGV300/800 manual... If it helps.

yep...it's the guitar. The tailpiece is totally stripped. I think I'm gonna sell it as is and stick with my jazzmaster. Thanks for the response.
