Currently reading: Silence by Shusaku Endo. I'm half way through it and I just picked it up yesterday! What an amazing piece of literature! Endo is called the Japanese Graham Greene and I can see why.

Its a book I've been wanting to read but then forgot about it. But Scorcese is making it into a movie to be released next year and so that reminded me. I'm really looking forward to the movie

Rummaging through the acoustic-room bookshelf in the corner at Dave's, pushing aside the unwanted volumes of Gibson stuff, and snagged Smith's 'Fender: The Sound Heard 'Round the World' - still had the DVD in the back cover pocket with the vintage factory "tour" footage. So I'll be watching that, reading that, while listening to the Cubs on shortwave tonight.

The subscription is also a membership so if you ever visit the institute you have some privileges.
After many years or subscribing, a few phone calls to explain to them what we do for a living, it unlocked the doors to the guitar and musical instrument/memorabilia vaults a few years ago for my wife and I.
Amazing experience!

Wow, that would've been awesome! How long have they had that? Back before .mil & I finally parted ways in '80 I spent some time at the Pentagon and would've had to take a week's leave just to get a taste of everything there is to do - like moth to flame for this kid. One of a handful of places worth actually crossing the river from VA for. Girl Scout time is coming up so that's on my list, no matter what Grandma orders.

Oh, O.K.
It's late (for me) brain is dead.
The vault/storage thing was something my enterprising wife set up for us. It's not a regular thing. She came up with the idea, sent them a few emails telling them that we did restoration and such and were possibly interested in writing an article. They emailed back and later called and asked when we'd be in town and agreed to take us in. We were able to help a little regarding evaluation of condition, pointing out modifications on some of the instruments and also instructing what a few needed, specifically an old Gibson Mando bass. Besides guitars my eyes popped out of my head when upon entering the room/vault I saw this actual drum kit which I recognized instantly from being a big Benny Goodman fan. I also got to play Irving Ashby's (Nat Cole Trio) Stromberg archtop (I'm a huge Nat Cole Trio fan as well)
All this stuff was just out for us to handle, hold and in some cases play!
My wife got to go through a box labeled with Ella Fitzgerald's name and actually held some of her grammys and other personal items.
Incredible experience.
My Dad was right. Reading is your friend.
