Crazy Aces were playing at a car and motorcycle show this past weekend.
About mid set we hit our instrumental cover of "Money" by Barrett Strong.
Just as we were hitting the second verse we heard loud singing through the PA and monitors!
Perplexed and perturbed we looked around to find that the sound man had decided to pick up his announce mic and SING ALONG!
He sang the verse and chorus and then stopped but then repeated this act later when we played "Paint It Black".
Nutty stuff. At least he was in tune........
One of our fans actually caught him in the act
Weird!

Hey Jeff,

We've had that happen too. Some years back we were playing at "Snellville Days" (Snellville....where everybody is somebody), no kidding, and we were about half way through what we called then, "The Trailer Park Surf Suite" which was a lot of vintage county song snippets arranged in a medley by ascending keys. We broke into San Antonio Rose when this little skinny OLD man jumped up on stage and started belting it out over the one mic set up in front of the band. We all looked at each other like.....what? Pretty soon it was a bit of a train wreck as our arrangement of the whole thing collided with what he was expecting.............. Snellville, figure.

Remember that one Woody?

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

My first band was playing a house party around 1980 and we had a drunk guy grab the mic during "Pipeline" and start singing "I'm surfing Pipleline! I'm surfing Pipeline!" He belted it out about 4-5 times before our drummer clocked him hard in the back of the head with a fiercely thrown drumstick Big Grin .

Thanks for sharing those stories Bill and Ed.
I suspected that we were not alone in this experience.

Cheers,
Jeff

Every time we play, there's a chick on stage with us who grabs a mic and starts singing...oh wait...she's our singer...we're doing non instro surf, maybe that's why. Wink

The Hicadoolas

We had that happen once. We were playing wipeout and a mate jumped on stage and started to sing Surfin' Bird... Somehow he made it work, though I'm glad no recordings exist of it!

We always invite the audience to sing along, if they know the words. Big Grin

Some people seem to be adept at putting themselves in a "creative condition" that lets them boldly come up with words where none had gone before.

Jeff, that's a great story - and no, you're not alone.

Kind of ballsy, but at least it was all in good fun!

It was truly in good fun, no doubt but what a surprise as we had no idea for a minute where it was coming from.

Cheers,
Jeff

Back when I'd still frequent IRC chats, one of my normal haunts was connected with a entirely Internet based radio station, with a chat-bot announcing the up coming song in chat. My joke, whenever an instrumental was up next, was along the lines of "trying to remember the words to 'Pipeline'...oh wait, that's instrumental." Another joke, to go along with the other, was "trying to remember the words to 'Tequila'...oh yeah...'Tequila!'" Smile
