Actually, I agree with this and other similar comments above. What I was really getting at was that just learning to play other people's tunes is ultimately a bit of a dead end. Writing your own is much less so.
I regularly write tunes that I can't play, by the way.
We all like to learn a few covers, of course.

It is not 100% surf music but "Rumble" from Link Wray is easy and very fun to play Which are the best combo for learning to play... A lot of Wray's songs are great for learning: "Panco Villa", "Jack the ripper"...
