Permalink I ❤︎ that Bongo vibe!

New Topic

As we have all entered the Surf scene at different times and places and our journey through the music has varied just as much, I expect y'all will have a lot to offer on this flavor of Surf/Instro music.

For me, my first distinct awareness of Bongos/Bongo'ish vibe in Surf/Instro was through Fifty Foot Combo (Go Hunting IIRC), but it's two recent purchases that have inspired me to start this topic - a proper copy of The Langhorns debut release and the track The Sinner, and Swami John Reis and the Blind Shake on the album closer, Sets of Fire.

Note! I do say Bongo V I B E ... I fully appreciate what I'm describing may or may not actually be bongo drums. Anyhow - would love to hear some of your favorite examples that have it!

Hey fady, I love the bongo/conga vibe, too. Stereophonic Space Sounds Unlimited (SSSU) uses 'em in about every track they do:

"The Aquatudes" play our rendition of Les Baxter's Quiet Village at Unsteady Freddie's Surf Rock Shindig, at Otto's Shrunken Head Tiki Lounge in NYC last year. That's me on the skins!

Tiki-licious rifs there boys! This is the strip-down sound of tiki lounge music for the XXIc.

Squink Out!

Great stuff Fady. Fifty Foot Combo's Evil a Go Go has extra percussion also; probably some of the same material from Go Hunting. But definitely worth getting as the energy level is a bit higher. It's a very rare album, long out of print. I only have a digital copy sadly.

Here's a video of Fifty Foot Combo from their gig in Amsterdam last year including Bongos

I love Bongos
We've used them on a few tunes like "Gotham", "Invasion Of Malibu" and "Jedd's Gold Sled" and you'll most likely find them on future tunes of ours.

They invoke such a cool vibe.
I'm loving these examples posted above!
How about some more?

Jeff

Here he comes, the godfather of bongos in instrumental rock: Preston Epps with "Bongo Rock" (1959).

The song was also featured on the "Surfin' Bongos" LP by the Bongo Teens, which was one of the monikers of Dave Aerni and Paul Buff (aka the Tandems), who ran the recording studio in Cucamonga, where the original "Wipe Out", "Pipeline" and "Bustin' Surfboards" were recorded and which later became Frank Zappa's place.

"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

Gotta put a vote in for The New Dimensions.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
