Permalink How about an "International Surf Music Appreciation Day"?

New Topic

What would everyone think about an "International Surf Music Appreciation Day" around which the community could organize concerts, releases, and reach out to people who may not be fans or even aware of the genre through social media? I'm inspired after Saturday's "Record Store Day" which has really taken off in recent years. There's a day for everything else, so why not for the music we all hold so dear? If so, what date would we choose? I was thinking about the date which either "Mr. Moto" or "Let's Go Trippin'" was recorded or released. In my quick search all I could find was "Let's Go Trippin'" was recorded August 23 in 1961.

The Squares - 1995-2002
The Mystery Men? - 2012-
MOONBASE - 2012-2017
The KBK - 2017-2022
The Frigidaires 2021-
Southern Surf Stomp!

I like the idea! I'm open to ideas about what I could do, being neither performing surf musician, promoter or producer.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

I'm not a big fan of an annual event like this. While dropping the pretense of a 'day' I feel the effort could be put towards the surf community banding together to better market/advertise releases, shows. This could including banding together to purchase ad space, a systematic approach towards announcing shows, etc...

Imagine where religion would be if there was only one year a day in which effort was put into proselytizing.

If there is a single day, the day that would make sense would be the date of the SG101 convention. Having it on a significant day, means weekdays are in play... a graveyard for live gigs.

Releases really can't be organized in our community, it would also dilute the market actually taking sales away from bands(who is going to drop $100 on music in a day, aside from myself).

One day a year just isn't enough, to build a new fanbase you have to be out there all the time. Constantly making the music available to people, playing shows, being unexpected.

I think a lot of these are great ideas but how do we go about implementing them?

The SG101 convention is a destination whereas I feel working at the grass roots level, where every town with a surf group therein organizes an event, could be more effective. To avoid weekdays, we could always go with a specific Saturday within a month or pick the weekend closest to whichever date we may choose.

"Releases really can't be organized in our community, it would also dilute the market actually taking sales away from bands(who is going to drop $100 on music in a day, aside from myself)."

This is a totally valid concern but there are always "perks", extra content like b-sides, covers, and the like. Artists (and even labels like Double Crown and Deep Eddy) could also chose to put their material on sale the day in question as well.

"One day a year just isn't enough, to build a new fanbase you have to be out there all the time. Constantly making the music available to people, playing shows, being unexpected."

I TOTALLY agree but how is that different from what we're already doing and how effective are we? I just think having a day could be an extra push or something around which we can all rally.

I like the idea
I think it has a lot of possibilities
If events, shows, releases were happening simultaneously in many cities and locations the regular media and social media could be buzzing for weeks before, during and after in a slightly elevated way.
This could help to create an awareness.
Most importantly - It could help to draw in new fans, enthusiasts other than our already devout.

Cheers,
Jeff

Perhaps try to make it a part of, or an extension of, International Surfing Day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Surfing_Day This day has been garnering a lot of attention over the years and growing in scope & size. It brings a built-in audience too.

CUTBACK

Here's some info from the NESMA site. June is surf music month.

Did you know April is International Jazz Month? Sandy did, and she wondered why there couldn’t be a month dedicated to surf music as well. Now there is – since 2009, June is officially International Surf Music Month! This was accomplished by filling out paperwork with Chase’s Calendar of Events (http://www.mhprofessional.com/templates/chases/special-months.php#june ). An official organization has to “sponsor” a month in order for it to be designated for a topic or cause. In 2009, NESMA was already 7 years old, with an established web presence and 76 members, and this was enough clout to get June designated for surf music. (The month of June was chosen for three reasons: 1) it wasn’t Jazz month, 2) June 20th was already designated as International Surfing Day - a nice connection, and 3) Mike’s birthday is in June.)
