Some unexpected financials have prompted me to put this baby up for sale - It's a custom amp that combines the Fender Brownface 6G2 Princeton circuit and its renowned tremolo with a 2-knob version of the Blackface-era reverb.
Pertinent Specs:
- Fender 6G2 Princeton circuit
- Added Blackface reverb with Reverb and Dwell controls and a full-size pan
- Rough brown tolex w/ wheat grill, blonde knobs and a leather dogbone handle
- Grab-n-go cab size of approx. 20" wide X 19" high X 10" deep
- Carbon resistors and upgraded caps in the signal path
- Metal film resistors in power circuits for lower noise and better reliability
- Tube rectified by a JJ 5U4GB (will include a Weber Copper Cap if you want to go that route)
- 12" Weber California speaker
- RCA jacks for 2-channel Rev/Vib pedal (not included)
I briefly owned a Blonde Bassman, and while it wasn't my main sound it always haunted me as a great tone to have around. When I needed a grab-and-go combo, I decided to give the 6G2 Princeton a try and decided to add in reverb because, well, non-reverb amps drive me crazy.
I used a Weber kit for the cab, chassis, iron and some of the hardware, then upgraded the obvious things you upgrade on a Weber kit (jacks, pots, etc.) The circuit was built from an upgraded selection of components on eyelet board, and I mostly used an insulated/cloth hybrid wire for vintage looks without the vintage noise. Speaker is a 12" Weber California, which I think matches well with this circuit and gives it a little extra oomph for gigging.
The sound is unreal. The vibrato is everything it's rumored to be - swirly, round and wobbly, pure Duane Eddy. I'd never played through one of the Brownface wobblers, and I've never heard anything like it. The primary 6G2 circuit has a warmth and roundness that Blackface amps can't touch while sounding much tighter and more useable than its tweed predecessors. Really nice cleans, and when you wind it up it becomes an absolute flamethrower! The reverb is also pure Fender, and the added Dwell control lets you dial the splash back to a roomier sound, which is great for blues and jazz styles.
The size and 12" speaker make it the perfect grab and go, and the external speaker jack lets you plug into a larger cab to really move some air.
Overall the amp's in excellent shape and really hasn't left my basement. Cosmetically it's pretty much perfect, and I'll include a brown Fender cover that fits it really well. If anything, this amp would benefit from nice tubes - other than the JJ rectifier, I've just been burning it in with the Chinese kit tubes - so throwing in a nice set of glass would take it up several notches.
