I decided to create a topic just to discuss this amazing guitar, and let the conversation about the 15th Anniversary of Tsar Wars get back on topic.
This conversation more or less starts here.
Picking up that conversation...

Shows what I thought I knew. I thought strings got duller with age, not brighter.
The brightest positions are on 1 and 3. The middle switch position seems to rob the guitar of overtones. I have seriously thought about getting a set of AV '65s for it, but I just hate to modify the guitar.

Noel, I believe I primarily used the middle position when I used that guitar. I think you should definitely put new strings on the guitar, and I'd recommend giving the Chromes a shot. I think it might benefit from having the action slightly raised, too. I may have lowered it a bit too much towards the end there. Good luck!

Thanks, Ivan! Carol Busbey, Daniel Short, John Drysdale and I (and I hope a surprise guest) are playing a very special song at the Instro Summit next month, and I want this guitar to sound just right. I'd been using my Strat for it, but there's something about this song that makes me want to play the Jazzmaster. But I don't have a lot of time to try out different strings. I wish I'd brought this up last month.
I'll add I get the best tones out of it with its volume dimed.

Now that we have a separate topic - I really wonder how would the rest of The Space Cossacks songs sound like had they been played on a JM. . . .

I bet Ivan would've done whatever was needed to make it sound like a Strat

Wow! It's rare to see a photograph of Ivan playing this guitar. Thanks!

It's even more remarkable considering where I found the picture: ye olde myspace!
A few years ago almost everyone stopped using myspace because they had changed the design and deleted a lot of the content (which btw included the complete gig log of my first surfband). Then a while ago the pictures were back up again. So if you want to see pictures of a band that disbanded before facebook was around, try myspace again.

Ugh, what a HORRIBLE photo! I wish it had stayed buried! Another thing MySpace screwed up!

For one, I'm tickled you found it & thanks for sharing, no matter what Ivan says!
That pic also reminds me why I'm likely going to grab a short-scale bass if I do actually pick one up. when in Dave's I periodically go over and pick up a PB just to remind my inadequate self how much respect I have for bass players.

I keep wondering, Ivan, what were your considerations on using the JM for those songs as opposed to the Strat?
I listened to those songs from your live shows records - you play them on a Strat and they still sounds fine.
Not nearly as powerful!
I guess you mean that the sound would have been too fat?

I picked the JM for the songs where I wanted a more trad/reverb-heavy sound, in the style of the Astronauts or the Fathoms, especially if the part had a great deal of palm-muting. Though, there were a few instances of going for a different sound than that, like Gunmetal Express where I wanted more of a dry 'spy' tone, and Fieta Del Cossacapulco, where the JM just somehow had a more fitting tone. In most cases I knew exactly the sound I wanted, while in other cases it was a matter of trying both and seeing what works better.

Well, this is why I sold the Jazzmaster and only play Strats now!

No, just too 'diffuse', not focused enough. Strats can sound plenty fat - nobody ever told Dick Dale his tone wasn't fat enough, right? But the Strat's sound is somehow harder and more focused, across all the frequencies, while the JM's sound is a bit softer and yes, more diffuse, doesn't quite have the same power and impact to my ears. Some players make that work for them, but that's not what I wanted.

I'm playing this Jazzmaster at the Instro Summit during the open jam. Feel free to ask to see it or even play it. This is a guitar that deserves to played well, and often.

Noel or Ivan - do you know what is the neck radius and fret type? (can't find specs on the net)
Did Ivan changed the stock pickups when recording Tsar Wars?
Found the answer on that one
I found one being sold here (94 limited , blonde with gold hardware) , but claimed to be MIJ rather than CIJ - does it make any sense?
Mark.

Pure vintage. 7.25" radius, vintage frets. The neck is a thin C-shape.

Mine is definitely labeled "Made in Japan"
