The Iron Cross was "adopted" by car and motorcycle clubs in the USA after World War II. 60's surfers used it. Later the skateboarders picked up on it. Sort of a medal of bravery type of thing....? I can understand it probably has different connotations in Europe. But note that the Iron Cross predates the Nazi's (goes back to the early 1800's I think). —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Well we are getting off the subject of the Volcanos here. Surfraptor, just know that the Iron Cross was a part of post World War II American sub-cultures like hot-rods, bikers, surfers, etc. The Iron Cross as a war medal goes back to the 1800's, long before the Nazi's took over Germany. The Iron Cross, as a symbol by itself, meant something before and after the Nazi's used it. I'm not here to defend it, but it was a symbol used in 60's surfing culture in AMERICA. I can understand the uncomfortable feelings (or worse) it may produce in some. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

And I can add that as a Jew, I feel no particular offense by the use of the german cross. Symbols change with time, and to diminish the meaning of Nazi symbols is particularly gratifying. —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

What a timely bump for a great band, since just yesterday pulled out Finish Line Fever to listen to in the car. It almost prompted me to make a new thread about underrated Surf bands...but they really aren't underrated . . . just one more excellent group that maybe gets lost in the shuffle. I consider both of their albums must haves. The Volcanos are way up on my list of faves. |
