When I was in Art School back in 1990, I knew a guy who was all into these trashy '60s Japanese bands that played Yardbirds covers, and probably Takeishi Terauchi and other real geniuses, but I never paid his taste any mind because I thought he was just being arch, like Mike Patton's Fantomas delving...
Where can these old amps be found today at such bargains? I've only seen a Teisco Checkmate once in a shop in Calgary (where I sold a small Gibson combo & picked up my Harmony Rocket!) and never anywhere else I've lived in North America.

Squink Out!

on eBay you find whatever... that is still the best source for strange stuff Smile

I would think the Japanese amps would be far more common in Europe than the USA. Didn't the US have pretty hefty tariffs against Japanese products in the 60s and 70s which would have made these amps much more expensive than the domestic amps?

What a pity for me, that THIS mighty mighty Solid State is on ebay USA:

What could be the cheapest shipping rate for these 2 parts?
I guess this will sound as good as a TA60. Or better. ...but I haven`t seen such an amp in real unfortunately...
Anybody in Europe want to sell such an amp???? Let me knooooooow!

Twang cheers!

Here's something similar in the Netherlands: http://bit.ly/1Cs3CxF

Those speakers are pretty unusual! Polystyrene voice coils? "The speakers are not to be pushed too hard, coils can heat up and melt the cone"

Thanks for the info Gilette.
But this is not similar to the Yamaha amps...
Or where do you see the similarity?

What do you mean with "the speakers are not to be pushed too hard"?
Do you mean they should not be played loud?

I'm just quoting the eBay page. I would interpret that as: don't play too loud for too long!

Seems unlikely that a speaker coil would get that hot. If you're putting 100W into it, it's going to generate some heat, but whether that would be enough to melt polystyrene? Odd choice of material.

http://thewaterboarders.bandcamp.com/

Oh, this is just a not well known material...

We play them LOUD since years. Never had ANY problems with them. Even no heat problems or resulting melting problems.
The Yamahas seem to be highest guality amps! An amp nerd told me once that even the wood what Yamaha used has got resonant characteristics. ...but I don`t know about woods... I just know that those big old Yamaha amps are pure loud and warm clean sound.

Twang cheers!
