Ah, Tsar Wars! It's one of these records that I have listened too so often in a short period of time, that afterwards I just couldn't put it on for a while any more. There are so many ideas, so many things to explore on the record that I just had to play it over and over and over again, but then I really had to take a break from the album (same thing as with the first Slacktone album and may other great records).
But the good thing is of course, that after a while I can start to listen to the record again, and the cycle restarts... (In fact it did this morning.)
I think it's a great idea to celebrate the anniversary of this album. Jake's dedication towards the record and the enthusiasm of him, Noel and Brian speaks for itself, I think. I mean: in the music industry such anniversaries usually focus on records, that are still in print and will then be rereleased nonetheless in a newly remastered version with newly "discovered" bonus material. But here we celebrate a record, which has been out of print for quite some time, just for the fun of it. How cool is that?
But of course I wouldn't mind a reissue of Tsar Wars, coupled with the unreleased live album from the Foothill Club (1998), 
Ivan, will you be playing some Cossack's songs on the Surfer Joe Festival or are you already settled on Madeira material for this one?

I read this and had to buy it last night...then my chubby fingers bought the wrong album by mistake (Never Mind The Bolsheviks)...
However, I loved the Surf with "Shadows" tones that are on a lot of the tracks. There's something I can't put my finger on which is very European.
So chubby finger has just purchased Tsar Wars too and is looking forward to listening on the journey home.

Essential to get Interstellar Stomp. I got by on Never Mind The Bolsheviks (my 1st surf purchase) for a good long time. Then Tsar Wars magically reappeared just after I'd bought Stomp. You can't have too much Space Cossacks!
Getting the albums with the songs in their original proper sequence was a revelation. The flow is so important, as important as all the songs I was missing by just having the Bolsheviks collection.
BTW: I also have the split vinyl 7" with 2 songs each from The Space Cossacks and the Penetrators. The Cossacks songs are Neutron Sabre and Shark Attack. The Penetrators did Redlined and The Truant. Artwork by Rip Thrillby of the Penetrators. Gotta be one of my 10 favorite possessions.

One of the first albums that got me into surf music. Was really into metal and the intensity of the Space Cossacks really hit the spot. Definitely a gateway album to surf music and gateway albums are always very special. Came for the Apes of Wrath, stayed for the Tsunami Tsurprise you could say.

Starting with the cover, the album is awesome.
Long time favorite since I first listen to it several years ago.
In my opinion it is one of those records you talk about when anybody asks
what is Surf Music?
I bought it on vinyl last Summer for $10 bucks from Art at the Convention.

Simon, I doubt the Tsar Wars reissue will happen any time soon, if ever, but I do have great hope the '98 live recording will see the official light of day at some point, and hopefully sooner rather than later. I haven't discussed it with Art B. in a while, but I have been thinking a bit about it lately. I listened to it a couple of weeks ago again, and it's really a great-sounding document of possibly one of our best-ever shows, certainly in terms of our performances. I had hoped that the original 8-track multitracks still exist, but Art informed me some ago that they do not, so we just have this mixed version. The only thing I would have liked to fix on that version would be to lower the bass drum, but as is it is still really good. Anyway, stay tuned....

Nope, it'll definitely be a mix of both! Much fun to be had, hopefully for the audience as much as for me!

Thanks for this, I really appreciate it. Surf music hasn't really been known for 'albums' for much of its history, it was more about the singles or particular songs, but my background was in 'album-rock', starting with the Beatles. The ability of an album to really transport a person has been extremely influential on my own musical sensibilities, and that's what I wanted us to accomplish. Of course, there was The Ventures In Space, and that kind of a concept was also a big influence, so it did exist in surf music. And for my money still the best surf album ever is the Atlantics' 2nd album, "Now It's Stompin' Time". We strove to meet those high standards.
(I see people in the wider media saying the album is dead, and I flat out refuse to go along with them - to hell with those people! I love albums, I will always love albums, and I will always love bands that put their primary creative energies into albums.)

Actually to be fair what attracted me to Space Cossacks was that it WASN'T metal  Was a revelation to hear what I love (melody, excitement, tremolo picking... tremolo bars!) in a whole new musical context. One that has a fun vibe to it. Metal can be pretty serious business!
In either way, yes, Mission accomplished on all fronts I would say!
Very excited to hear that Surfer Joe performance is in fact Space Cossacks and Madeira songs! Was planning on going and well, now I am that much more planning on going.

Does Art own the tapes? If so/If not....
Crowdfund it! Especially if Art doesn't own the tapes, just set a $2000 goal to cover the pressing of $500 and everything after that is profit!
