Desert, The axe (yes I played Nokie's axe at the charity event.. nice of him, wasn't it?) plays nice and, at the time I could have ordered one for about 2 grand.. but the unknown manufacturer bit bothered me - so I didn't take the plunge. One the other hand... I also own a Nokie Edwards Mosrite model.. signed by Semie (and Nokie at the event)..circa 1988-1992. It's a white sparkle with maple fretboard, a different body cut from the regular Mosrites and having a sidejack ( I recall that Steve Erickson's number 0002 was a top jack). I found it in a Music store in Nashville,TN - gathering dust!! The dealer was happy to unload it to me for a whopping $1,000.00. This was spring 1992.. Semie passed away that late summer, I think, and the dealer actually called me back asking if I wanted to sell it. Hmmm.. NO! I still have the axe. It may go in the ground with me. |

Desert: I still rather doubt Nokie owns any part of this company. From what I've read, this small outfit won the contract to build Nokie's guitar rather than come up with an initial design of their own. And Bob Sickler, a graphics artist here in New York State did the guitar design for Nokie - with a nod to the Mosrite design of the 60s. So anyone up there in Oregon-land every hear of this guy? $2K is pricey for a guitar.. is the work up to snuff? BTW - Thank God it's not being built (or imported) by Ed Roman. Another BTW.. If you do see Nokie, ask him just what was the big deal in keeping the manufacturer such a secret. It's been 5-6 years since I played this axe - courtesy of Mr. Edwards - and he could have had an order from me years ago. I don't get it. be well |

Desert.. I emailed Rock Creek but haven't gotten an answer back. The article was dated in late 2005, I think.. Their website doesn't mention or list anything with the Hitchhiker guitar.. so maybe they don't make them anymore. I really would appreciate your letting me know how the Hitchhiker plays and sounds. As I mentioned, I played an early one 5 years back (it was Nokie's) and liked it.

Desert, And if the info is out there in cyberland, I WILL FIND OUT... Desert... I'm going to say this as best I can - with carefully chosen words, I hope. I'd love to be wrong... but the manufacturing, marketing and pricing of this axe leaves a bit too much in doubt for me. Stay tuned.. Be well.. |

Desert & other interested parties. From Rock Creek Guitars in Washington state, I got this reply: " The Hitchhiker Guitar is now being produced by the Aria Guitar Co. in That's quite a departure from the 2005 article I posted on this forum which stated Rock Creek Guitars was to make them.. that's 2 YEARS AGO. What happened? Further food for thought.. Getting a guitar made in Japan nowadays is NOT cheap. Their labor costs are on par with ours in the US. Shipping and import duties add to the cost. Have you priced a Japanese made Gretsch lately?? Not cheap! There may be further export/import restrictions in the government pipes also with regard to the sale of tonewoods and instruments.. Not good. For this and other reasons, |

Tell that to Roger McGuinn! He seems to manage quite a career out of an RV. Three words... "Wireless Internet Connection". But yeah, your message is quite clear. I would add that Gretsch prices carry with them the Gretsch name, history, and a certain reputation. The Nokie Guitar carries with it the Nokie name, and I don't know about you, but when I think aria, my mind goes to cheap acoustics, decent electrics, and for some reason the year 1982 pops up in my head... Most people in this country that know the name "Nokie" are registered on this site. No offense to Nokie, but truth is truth. |

Well, failure to comply with a judgement does start a number of wheels turning that can make life miserable for "normal" people. For your average lowlife who is likely to appear on "cops", it can take forever to catch up with someone, but if an individual expects to travel internationally? File taxes? Has even a modest real estate holding, royalty payments, a retirement plan or an active pension? Different story entirely. Don't get me wrong, having a location to serve papers makes it easier, and the more mainstream the individual is the easier it is. I really wasn't defending Nokies ability to run a business. I was just stating that I know of at least one older, less known, itinerant musician who seems to be able to manage a legitimate, productive, and reliable career from an RV. |
