I saw it yesterday in the cinema, it was great! And the interview Cousin Mary did on KFJC was an added bonus. |

Briefly, I am from what you guys call the first wave of Surf Music, I play left-handed and upside down like DD (Donald Duck?) When I was thirteen or so, I learned by playing those old 45's over and over, trying to capture that magic SURF SOUND. I was honored to see an earlier version of "The Wrecking Crew" at a local restaurant, (The Blue Dragon in Kawaihae) here on the Big Island in 2012. After the film, a local Kona Disk Jockey interviewed Ollie Mitchell-Trumpet and Slyde Hyde-Trombone, both of these guys from the Wrecking Crew, retired and moved to my community. (Tijuana Brass, Steely Dan, Concert for Bangladesh...etc.) Ollie passed away a couple of years ago, but Slyde still plays. One of the Theme Parties that we (Solar Wind Surf Band) do here in Hawaii, is... when people turn 50, they have a Hawaii 5-0 Party. Come dressed as a Beach Bum, Undercover Cop, Chinatown Gun Moll ala Susie Wong or a Gangster/Outlaw. Which here is pretty much "come as you are". Whenever we get a gig like this, I add a horn section for the final set, making us a 12-piece band. Two Sax players, a trumpeter, and Slyde on Trombone. We play Wild Weekend, Miserlou, (Trumpet solo!) Whittier Boulevard, Peter Gunn, Hawaii 5-0 and Tequila. This usually brings the house down. This Island has lots of Longboard Surfers from the 50s and 60s, STILL Surfing, and everyone loves Tequila! Slydes wife "Yolie" sings in our Final Number "La Bamba" (we were both born in East LA) At our last gig, Slyde took me aside and said..."you know Kim, I played on the original recording of Hawaii 5-0 with the Ventures. and every week, we played for the TV Show, too." I just melted in his greatness. What a friggin' honor! When we play around town (not too often), he comes and listens, he likes Solar Wind. Since you got me yacking, Without going off-thread, here's a little bit more about The Wrecking Crew. Back in this time (The early sixties) Our Music wasn't known as Surf Music, in the Music Industries line of thinking, it all fell in a category called "Instrumental" So, to buy a record, you would go to like, Wallach's Music City in Hollywood, and go through their vast rows of bins lined with 45 records, and they were all in there together, in the Instrumental Rows. You would have to SEARCH for the "Surf" music. Then you could take your whole gang of kids into one of their "Listening" rooms and play your record, and hear it, to make sure it was what you wanted, kinda like a fitting room in a clothing department store, it was really fun! Thanks, Kim. I really appreciate that. Your life is your life. You lived it. Anyone who isn't interested won't keep reading your posts. Me? I'm fascinated. I read all of Randy Nauert's posts about his life and times in and after The Challengers, which led to learning all about the iconic Fender ad of Jon Martin surfing with a Jaguar. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! Got my stuff signed by the great Hal Blaine and percussionist Frank Capp. Hal is hands down one of my all-time heroes. They were spinning Wrecking Crew tunes over the Amoeba store sound system and in between signing stuff Hal would yell out, "That's my drums"!!! What a cool cat. Stoked to get my stuff signed and shake the hand of this giant. My loot, including two all-time faves, Hal's Hot-Rod record, Boss Drag by the T-Bones and the previously signed by Dean Torrance J&D record... Hal and Denny Tedesco...
