"Southern California Surf Music, 1960-1966," will drop in three weeks. Here's one of the many photos that will be included. This is Kathy Marshall, "Queen of The Surf Guitar," on stage with Dick Dale at the Pavalon Ballroom in Huntington Beach, September, 1964. The book is due April 6 (advance orders on Amazon). —www.johnblair.us Last edited: Mar 17, 2015 17:09:08 |

Already pre-ordered & REALLY looking forward to this John. Edit: That's a great shot. Almost looks like someone was getting some trophies later (if they don't tumble from the riser). —Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. What an amazing photo! This book will be a treasure trove of them, I am sure! I'd love to get a close up of that kick drum logo too. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Wow!! Kathy with Dick, playing the Strat custombuilt for Eddie by Leo! Can't wait for the book, John! (BTW, Kathy was a real cutie!) —Ivan |

I was wondering who would notice that first. Guess I'm not surprised it was Ivan!!! Kathy also had a custom-built Jag, with a painted headstock, that you'll see elsewhere in the book. — |

John, any idea if she perchance has either of those guitars still, or if not, if she knows what happened to them? What a magical time... And Leo Fender was like Merlin in the court of King Arthur, directly supplying the tools for these sonic warriors to conquer all! (Well, conquer a bit here and there... ) —Ivan |

Great analogy Ivan. Like every time they would chip a blade he'd pull a new Excalibur out of his pocket protector. —Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. |

I'd love to buy this book fresh off the press, but I will force myself to wait & buy a copy at Surfer Joes. Might be able to pick up a few signings as well.... I really wish there were recordings of Kathy Marshall. Everyone says she was amazing. — |

Kathy still has that silverburst sparkle Strat. Her custom Jag is no longer in her possession. Also, the only recording she made was of a tune written for her by Mel Taylor of The Ventures. It was never released commercially and exists only as an acetate demo. She is backed by members of Eddie/Showmen on the demo. — |

Wow!!! How cool!! You (or somebody that's in contact with her) should take some photos of that guitar and do a feature on it. It's got such a cool story behind it. And here's hoping that acetate sees the light of day at some point! —Ivan |

artifacts by the bass drum look like two or three trophies. Sometimes at these shows, there were dance contests with a trophy to the winners. Kick drum logo looks like an old Murf the Surf cartoon surfer under the words Dick Dale and his Deltones. Better eyes may see it differently. I'm in, ordered the book today! —Happy Sunsets! |
