Ralf, I want to give a BIG THUMBS UP to your new album! Great stuff. Vatican Commando 69 is my favorite tune on it. Highly recommended. Jeff BTD gave me a copy on vinyl for my B-Day and I was spinning it just now. Great 60's vibe, playing and songwriting. You guys were killer live at Oasis where I really got to hear you better, but I think I already told you that. Keep up the great work. —BOSS FINK "R.P.M." available now from DOUBLE CROWN RECORDS! |

I'm a bit amazed, that there isn't more discussion about the new Kilaueas album yet. I have listened to the record a lot during the last weeks, after I got my copy at the nice record release party the band had together with the guys from Bang!Mustang (which featured Ralf playing an entire set inside an inflatable sumo ringer suit!). The first thing I really like about the album is how it manages to get along with very few different sounds: Besides the Sitar on "Wet Girls" and the Bass VI on "Universal Spy" (and "Vatican Commando 69" I think) all you hear are the two guitars of Ralf and Tom, which hardly change their overall sound throughout the record, drums and bass. What "makes" the record in this aspect is however how well the two guitars can be discerned from another in the mix: While Ralf has a very "open" sound, Tom's guitar is rather thick and percussive. This allows the band to really put the interplay of two guitars into the spotlight like the Bambi Molesters did on their first two albums: One guitar plays a theme while the other accompanies with muted single-note patterns. Almost every song on "Wiki Waki Woooo" features at least a section based on this principle and I think it is a great musical accomplishment. In addition to the musical quality another point that makes the record special from my perspective is the humour: From the other recent releases I bought you could get the impression that surf music has become a rather serious affair during the last years compared to some of the sillyness of the 1990s and early 2000s (and the 1960s actually). I can see how this is part of the desire of a lot of musicians trying to break out of the perception of surf music as a novelty thing, but sometimes I think we were better off, if we would keep the light hearted spirit alive, which definitely was one of the things that drew me into surf music in the beginning. Anyway, the new Kilaueas record actually is funny: Titles like "Vatican Commando 69", "The Tremelo Gear Butt" or "Planet Olga" give the tunes that bit of a twist, that many records are lacking today, I think. I won't spoil the only vocal on the record, because that was pretty funny also, when I first heard it. To sum it up: Get this record and have some serious fun! —Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin) |

Hey Simon, your description is spot on again! These are mostly the same things I think every time I listen to that album. I would add one more positive point: It is one of my personal top surf music releases in 2014 along with El Ray's new album. Ich habe es gekauft und habe ernsthaften Spaß! |

It seriously doesn't get better than Tremolo Gear Butt, Cafe Baghdad, or Vatican Commando 69! Platinum tracks on an album of gold! If you dont have this record, buy it asap! OK, I'm a bit late on this thread, but thought I'd chime in here. My finances haven't allowed me to purchase much new music, so I don't often get to review the new stuff that's out there. So, when my school sent me to Germany on an exchange, I tried to connect with people over in the area I'd be so I can get back into the swing of things. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet up with all who responded, but I did have the pleasure of meeting Ralf and Jaque of this great band. They were generous to give me a this great CD and it's all I've been listening to for the past few weeks. MAN IS THIS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, I got that out. My fave tracks: #3 Wet Girls. I LOVE THAT SITAR! #11 Planet Olga, #13 Cafe Bagdad, and #15 Lone Star. Honestly, I'm a sucker for a great melody, and it was hard to pick my top four songs, but these are the ones that I can't wait to hear as I listen to the album. This older punk likes slower songs with a lot of feeling when it comes to surf. Don't get me wrong, I still rock out, too. But as I said, I am a sucker for a great melody, and this album is FULL of them. I honestly think that Ralf, Jaque, and the gang NAILED a classic surf vibe with this album. Sometimes when I'm listening to this, it sounds like it could really have come from '63, it's THAT good. I'm happy to have met these great guys and look forward to seeing them on stage! Just another shout-out to the fabulous Kilaueas for the phenomenal job that they did on this album. I just just listened to again (twice consecutively), and it is sheer genius! I can't get enough of this album. Nice job Ralf, Tom, Jacques and Ollie! —Bob |
