This was very cool and exceeded my expectations. For input device, I purchased a Behringer UM2 on Amazon for $50. It has 1/4" input for guitar and combo XLR-1/4" for mic or other instrument. I am using a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.10 and am plugged direct into the Comcast Modem/Router. We pay for the 50MBPS service though through speed tests it's obvious we never get that. i suspect if you have an audio interface and hi-speed service you have everything you need. And the service is free.

And yes, the open sessions are like Guitar Ctr on a random Saturday. I went in and out of a few last night and they were kind of meandering. Most also did not have drummers, which I think would be key.

Overall, good experience and I will be making it a regular thing with Dick, so let's get a guitarist!

SG101'ers: Come jam on-line with us at Jam Kazam if you are in the New York-to-Boston region. Or, try organizing an on-line band practice or surf rock jam in your own area. It will be fun to discover more musicians on-line who share our love of instro-surf rock! Send them here to SG101 when you connect. - Dick

p.s. - Tony and I are looking to list a few Instro-Surf "standards" to lure some guitarists to play with us. What surf tunes do you suggest might be more commonly known by players out there? Thanks for any help you can offer! - Dick

Report from the field: Last night I had an opportunity to join in on a regularly-scheduled Jam Kazam weekly blues standards on-line jam. (Many of the tunes they played depressed me. Ba Da BOOM!) Pretty slow tempo stuff, some players styles seemed to exhibit some tentative hesitation between phrases that is hard to drum with in the absence of visual cues. The players were located in the Maryland-Ohio - Virginia Beach region, about 450 miles or so from me. I listened a while, played along alone via headphones, then asked to play some drums with them. Several lead and rhythm guitars, bass, piano, organ, and harp. Even vocals.(imagine!)They were very welcoming. Pretty organized, too. The session convener had listed a bunch of blues-ish standards, and sounds like they had posted tabs and chord charts, too. The mix was good. The latency was mostly good, though depended on each individual's equipment and connection, and relative latency to me. Some of the leads seemed to slow way down, and as we drummers often say: "it was them - not me!" Also, if they cranked their own volume to the point of distortion, it caused "jitter" in the signal, which chopped things up. Better to keep your own input low and turn up the other players in your headphone mix via the JK application. Overall, it worked pretty well, even with six people playing together, spread across 450 miles. I think it would be even better for band practice or low-latency regional playing with other players of compatible skill, who also know the tunes and arrangements. What else might you want to know? I'll hunt for some instro-surf-rock players and let you know how it goes. Join me if you can! -Dick
