Permalink Can't get wet tone out of Super Champ x2

Ahoy mateys!

It has been about 2+ years since I bought this tube AMP with digital effects.

It is a great amp, but no matter how much I fiddle with it , I can't manage to get a good wet tone out of it.

Maybe I want too much from such an amp, but I want to get as close as to a Hot Rod III's reverb I played in the guitar shop.
(Yes , I can just go and buy it but it is a monster amp for home use - volume on 1 already blows away everything)

Would like to hear your opinions about my settings. I know it varies from guitar and room , but maybe someone will give me some tips from his/her experience:

Guitar (CS Pro Closet Classic with Fat 50's)
volume:10

Amp:
volume:5 gain:2
bright channel:off
voice: Fender Twin Reverb
treb:6 mid:5 bass:4

effects: Spring Reverb 63
level:7 decay:3 tone:4

Cheers,
Mark.

What do you mean with a wet tone. You want more drip reverb?

Yes. Hot Rod III has a real spring reverb which really drips and sounds close to a Reverb Tank or Twin Reverb amp.

Mine, on the other hand sounds more distorted than "wet" no matter how much I played with the settings.

Id recommend getting a topanga by catalinbread or the new digitech polaris is also affordable and gives even more drip.

Buy an outboard reverb unit.

Hi... I have the X2 and keep it in my office for tinkering/practicing. Everyone's ear hears differently, but I found what I want using FUSE to mod amp # 16 Jazzmaster Ultralight along with effect #4 reverb with delay. I didn't like the X2 version of the #3 "Classic Spring Reverb". It is not the FRV-1 sound/drip. If I need true spring reverb drip/sound I add a Boss FRV-1 or a Carl Martin Headroom. JMO, hope this helps you...

What tubes do you use? I would recommend a JJ set. I would also swap the stock speaker for a secondhand Jensen C10R. World of difference Big Grin

OR build a Surfy Bear FET Reverb for about the same cost of a pedal.

...plus one on the JJ 6V6 (matched) tubes but my speaker upgrade was to a Jensen Jet Tornado 10" which stays clean forever.

Also check out the posts on this TDPRI page about half way down.

I see. I have the stock GT 6v6 tubes and the stock speaker.

Anyone who is using only the Fuze effects?

I guess you mean the Polara.
Played through it in the store , really liked the sound.

Is anyone using it here? Got any opinions about this pedal?

I am using the polara. switched to it from the topanga. just needed that bit extra drip. so far i am really happy with it and it even covers much more kinds of reverb. also the soft click is nice.

If you cant afford a real reverb tank to me the polara is as good as it gets

So far, the Polara and the Surfy Bear, sounds like an option for me.

Can someone enlighten me a bit about the Surfy Bear?
I visited the site , but got a bit baffled - is there no "whole kit" sale?

I have good hands and did many DIY projects , but my knowledge in electricity is null.

How hard it is to build one? (And what is the complete parts list I'll need?)

Does it worth the investment and work as compared to the 200$(thats the price in my place) Polara? Price and sound wise?

Thanks,
Mark.
