I'm going to try an experiment. I own and operate a small antique shop in south OC and I'm going to try playing surf music during the day to see how people react. One thing I've learned that sells in a store like mine is FUN. If people are having fun while 'discovering' the past... they'll spend more. What do you think? Surf is used to sell beer, cars, vacations... etc. Why not?

See if the mood of the stuff you play determines what you sell.

Surf music anywhere is good. It's hard not to smile when you hear it!

tdsurf,
Keep us posted on how that works out. I was going to suggest surf music for a friend's t-shirt shop at the beach but I didn't get around to it yet. I like your idea, too.

Funny you should mention this. We (Otto & The Ottomans) are playing in front of an antique store for their outdoor market next Saturday. There's a bar next door that will be grilling outside too. All the junk pickers can go get ripped, buy new junk & dance to Otto & The Ottomans! Win-win-win!

You could also do split tests, i.e. different genres of music against surf (for fairness test on your busiest days).
Good luck with this experiment. I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in the results. Wishing you a most profitable year of the ram.

I opened the store just 8 months ago. Simply by default I had set the radio to The Wave. What got me to thinking about this? We have the perfect demographic for classic surf visiting the store. I have a lot of 60's surfing and rock memorabilia on display and many times the topic will turn to something like "did you ever go to the Rendezvous?". I've had a lot of interesting discussions with boomers who remember those days and so I'm thinking the music will incite more of those conversations. I think I'll put out some old posters and records too.

It will be interesting to see if someone here, posts your place in the thread about hearing surf music in unusual places.

Given your additional info above about what you've done thus far, and the demographic of many of your clientele, I think a move to some familiar instrumental surf (or at least recognizable as such) would be a very smooth move.
I hit your Wave link above and, if that playlist that popped up is any indication, it's the kind of obnoxious music that would be blaring in my ears out on the island of the local kwik-stop as I'm trying to hear the sound of the gas coming up near the top of the filler neck...
Surf, or locale-appropriate music, would be way cooler!
Good Luck!

today was pretty weak sales for being a Saturday, the weather is too perfect (mid 80's) and everybody must be at the beach.(?)
But funny enough, I did sell a Surfer's Choice LP. To a young 30 something and his girlfriend. I have about 35 Beatles LPs and none of those sold. So Dick Dale is officially more popular than the Beatles. Today at least.
