So we start recording today. We've been rehearsing writing and arranging for the last two months, and we're ready to lay it down.
We're recording at Metrosonic studios in Brooklyn. They have a big live room and a great old Ampex 16 track machine there and I've been stockpiling 2" tape, which isn't cheap! It's money well spent as far as I'm concerned tho...

Geez, we have never thought of that. Now I better understand why I am having so much fun down in the basement.

Thanks guys! We spent about 8 hours yesterday and got 5 songs recorded, it took about 3 or 4 hours to get everything going - usual studio nonsense. Once we got all set up, everything went pretty smoothly, although I hate using headphones. I've never been in a studio where the headphone mix was good. Everybody always wants their instrument louder in the mix, which leads to total cacophony so I just deal with it best as I can It sucks using them all the same. We're going back in today for more tracking. Fortunately the studio has big windows with a great view. I'm kind of hoping a passing police or ambulance siren will sneak it's way on to the recording! Looks like we're off to a good start. I'll post some pics soon.

We nailed 17 songs in 2 days! 5 the first day, and 12 the next. All that rehearsal paid off, and at $65 an hour, that's a good thing!
One thing that really helped move things along, is that the studio has 3 assistants on hand to help move things and set up mics and such.
Next, we're going in on tuesday to do some overdubs and fix a couple of things. Then it's on to mixing.

Mine is a '53 as well. i just put in nos preamp tubes from the 40's, and it sounds great!

We did some Keyboard parts yesterday. Took full advantage of the Hammond organ, Leslie, and piano they have at the studio. Now it's really starting to sound like somthing. I'm very pleased so far and finally getting over my "demo-itis" - That's when you do a demo that sounds too good, and loose all objectivity when you go to record it for real. You keep chasing the sound you got on the demo.
Fender vs. Leslie!
We've been running our organ and rhythm guitar though a Bassman amp instead of a twin, and it's proven to be a potent combination.

Cool progress.
Yeah, Demo-itis can be a hinderance for sure and sometimes it's wise to chase the sound or feel of a demo but most of the time, for myself at least, I try to accept every performance or recording as a singular event. I really like the concept of something that went down "in that moment".
Looks like you guys are working hard and fast - I love it!

Me too. Lousy Atlanta weather is a great excuse to go down and work on mixes. Actually I feel like I am making a bit of progress. So far today has been pretty good.
Hey Psycho........is that an L-111 Hammond? I have an L-111 at my mom's house. It's all that's remaining from my days of playing keyboards in the early and mid-80's. Most of that time I had a Model D that I removed the chorus generator out of and two 147's. We actually picked that ugly rascal up and loaded in the back of our truck. Yep, standard loading dock height. Tough guys back then........no loading ramp or lift gate.
Those were great days, Hammonds and CP-70s. Real keyboards.
The Penetrators used Hammond pedals on Deception Bay. Cool, moody stuff.

Those studios are way too organized. I couldn't "work" like that.
