Hey guys,

watch this clip of one of few known surf-bands from soviet 60s!

hope you'll enjoy it!

Having seen that, now I am truly ready for Lent. Goodbye, cheese!

Squink Out!

It's not particularly a good song, especially being 10 years after something like this would have been more viable. It isn't bad, it is just extremely safe and generic 12-bar blues. And certainly not surf.

What is interesting, however, is the Shadows-influence in their presentation. You couldn't escape the Shadows influence in Europe.

Considering that it was the USSR, that it pretty good. It's all about context. Very little media from the West was infiltrating Soviet territory. That music would have been considered fairly progressive. Of course, looking at it without that context just makes it seem like cheesy and tired stuff.

The Shadows was the only band of the genre we knew of in USSR till the beginning of nineties I guess, so everything was The Shadows influenced then) I've got a small collection of various soviet instrumental bands of 60-80th, they mostly the same style but pretty nice nevertheless)

The jazzier part of the song was pretty cool, I've got to say. Just kind of brought down by that really dull 12-bar part.

Anything of note that you have? I bought a hand full of Russian music on vinyl once, traditional stuff and I really loved it. There is an amazing musical tradition in Russia! Talent musically and compositionally.

These guys were pretty cool
There was a vinyl of theirs that my parents got at the end of seventies, so when I first listened to it (in the beginning of eighties, so I was six or seven years old) - it was the first time I listened to surf! long years later I came back to it, but it surely was a love at first sight, cause I listened to this album almost to making holes in it)

well... i don't think that 12-bar blues is a real crime in surf music! Especially in 60s-)
And as shake_n_stomp wrote, it's all about context.
There were no many surfish bands behind the iron curtain. And there are almost no any recordings from that time-(
So that's why i like this video very much (and yeah, it's enough cheesy to like it-)

I guess in those times russian guys knew only Shadows and maybe Ventures. And Terry Terauchi bit later-)

12-bar blues is never a crime, that song just is horribly generic. That is okay, I was driven to illness by the song. I just have no urge to listen to it again. The other examples posted are stronger.
