I have the Eminence speakers in a Twin and like them quite a lot.

JObeast I have a pair of the Swamp Things in a closed back cab and they do indeed have a nice firm bottom ...and they were the closest in sensitivity to the JBLs in my twin so they don't sound unbalanced in comparison.

How big are they? More than 6" across the back? Less? It's hard to find this info online, only Jensen has diagrams of speaker dimensions.

Squink Out!

Great to see other fans of the Powerblock around! It's good to know I haven't lost my mind - or my hearing - yet, well, completely, anyway!

Here's my Powerblock setup, along with my two other recent purchases ('95 MIJ Strat and a Vox DA5 practice amp - I guess I've been on a real inexpensive-gear-kick lately!):

Ivan, is this a closed or open back cab?

Sancho, it's closed back with a port.

Wow, I completely forgot about this photo...

Thanks! I got the Crate Powerblock 2 weeks ago and I am still looking for a nice and compact cab. I have a 1x12" tone ring cab, but I am afraid I will blow the JBL D120F that's in there. Most of the cabs today are open back (at least here in the bigger stores), which seems like it would reduce bottom end and you simply will lose a lot of sonic power. Got to be patient...

I've used a Swamp Thang for the past three years playing guitar in a rockabilly band. I liked it so much I bought a second one for my back up amp. They have a nice clear as a bell 3-D thump on the low end and it takes QUITE a bit to get the speaker to roll or fart. The high end is also quite nice. Bordering on chime-y.

I simply looked on eBay for very cheap unloaded 1x12" cabs for a few weeks, and that's what came up. I remembered the company from the '80s, they made good stuff back then that wasn't very well known - and it looked cool, all black, so I sprung for it. I only paid $45!

I loaded the Swamp Thang in my DRRI for a while, but I didn't like the combination very much. I think this speaker is overkill for that amp. Though I still have the Swamp Thang in this KMD cab, I don't use it in any other amps. I think I came to the conclusion that the speaker is a bit too much on the dark side for some of the uses I needed out of it. But then, I've got JBLs and EVs in most of my amps, so how can you beat that? I think the Swamp Thing is still a great lower-cost alternative to those iconic speakers.

Can anyone point me in the direction of decent Swamp Thang samples? I have a twin cab that I'm considering upgrading....

I also own lots of JBL loaded cabs, but I really don't want to risk damaging one of those precious speakers. So the 1x12" standard speaker cab is really appealing (oh my, the GAS). Also it is a great opportunity to get a lightweight amp/speaker for every occasion, not only surf related. So I guess I'll simply wait until I find something appropriate.
Regarding the speaker I am torn between the Swamp Thang and the Texas Heat.

Swamp Thang:
Low End Response Aggressive
Low End Shape Fat/Round
Mid Range Response Aggressive
Break Up Modes Slow
Mid Range Shape Dark
Power Range Up to 150 watts
High End Response Moderate
Instrument Lead/Rhythm Guitar
Volume/Power Loudest
Genre Very American tone suitable for Blues, Rock, and Jazz
Overall Coloration
Very powerful, thick and chunky tone. Very touch sensitive with good sustain. Awesome bottom end.

Texas Heat:
Low End Response Aggressive
Low End Shape Fat/Chunky
Mid Range Response Aggressive
Break Up Modes Medium
Mid Range Shape Crisp
Power Range Up to 150 watts
High End Response Moderate
Instrument Lead/Rhythm Guitar
Volume/Power Louder
Genre American Rock, Blues, and Southern Rock
Overall Coloration
Nice warm, fat tone with a little top end bite and clarity. Very touch sensitive with a hint of British flavor.

Seems like the Texas Heat is not as dark as the Swamp Thang.

I put a Texas heat in a small combo and have been very happy with it.

Lots of "Great for backup" comments... I'm curious to hear if anyone has actually ~had~ to use this as a backup to their main amp during a gig going back to 2009 when this started?

I did see Doug's observation of another band (Surf Rockets) as the last post on the first page, but I don't think I've seen any others chime in with "saved the day" news.

Along the same lines, how many people also bring 2nd guitars (not because there are songs that call for it), and effects, and cables for the sole purpose of 'just in case'?

And how many of you add (or use instead) a Voltage Regulator + Line Conditioner every time you play?

I'm not Fight nor Stir the Pot , so please don't take it that way... truly just curious how far people take 'belt + suspenders' insurance policy for gigs.

Not yet knock on wood

I always bring a 2nd guitar, plenty of strings, cables and pics and my Furman power conditioner along. Always! Plus, there's always a backup amp, especially when playing payed gigs at bigger venues/fairs, etc.

Cool - this is maybe why you haven't heeded that second amp & set of gear! Just a theory ;)

played through a (modern) deluxe reverb with a swamp thing in it, sounded way more musical to my ears than the stock ones.

I use a 2x12" Celestion loaded cabinet with my Crate Powerblock...it sounds tasty...
