Had to add a fun experience to this thread:
Yesterday my wife and I were at the old RCA Studio A here in Nashville for a TV show filming. It's run by Ben Folds now and is called Nashville Grand Victor Sound. It's still the largest, un-interrupted floor space studio in Nashville and it's a grand dame of history in sound recordings.
In the corner of the studio (and a fine sounding corner at that) Ben has his personal turntable set up that with fancy speakers, power amp etc. is worth more than my car. During a break the studio manager played "Jolene" by Dolly Parton on vinyl on that system (quite a few of the crew had tried to spin songs on the system earlier but they were quickly shooed away as the stylus alone was worth $600.00) The track and album were recorded in that very room in 1974.
Well - that recording, in that room, through that system, on vinyl..........
Everyone stopped what they were doing and went over and listened and was moved by how live and full and rich the music was. If you didn't know better you would have thought the band was right there cutting the tune.
One of the in house engineers laughed and said "yep, we can't get that kind of reaction with Pro Tools".
Really cool experience!
I tried to get in good with the in house engineer so I could go back with some of my prized vinyl and just sit and listen, but I sure as hell am not touching that turntable myself! LOL
