There's a 1st edition on eBay right now, ending tonight. IMHO, it's well worth it, as the original has a certain charm and is considerably different than the 2nd. These don't come up very often and is ESSENTIAL reading!!!

Bump....there are copies of the first edition and the second edition on eBay right now! Grab them while you can!
And, according to Bob on Facebook, the 3rd edition is finished writing-wise, he's in the process of trying to lay it out himself. Apparently this involves teaching himself the software to do this, so it's a long process.

Glad this was bumped. I was thinking about this. I need this book. I'm still haunted by the memory of walking past a stack of them at a 90s guitar show, flipping through one and passing on it. Wasn't the surf fan I am now.
Not sure I can continue to wait for the nex ed., but the prices for used are putting me off for now. Hurry up, BOB!!

Scott, I know it seems like a lot of money, but seriously, this is an investment that keeps on giving. It's literally the only book of it's kind-period. It is chock full of enough vintage photos and direct, personal research amd interviews to keep one inspired for years! It, along with John Blair's discography, really are "the bibles" of our genre and vital to really digging in and studying it. Think of it like this...$115 is what...around 8 CDs at $15 a pop. You'd end up buying 8 more CDs for your collection, right?

A good book but unfortunately with many mistakes and sometimes difficult to understand a couple of the sentences (not only for foreigners like John once told me).
It looks like Bob didn´t have someone to read it before it was published. (Which was done before he published the second edtition)
Furthermore it must be taken into consideration that the book was published in 1988 which was already 15 years later than the heyday of surf music and now it is already 26 years old...

That's a great endorsement...and I am susceptible to a little "economic justification"...

JOHNPAUL bought my copy, back when I thought the third edition would come out very soon. Turned out I was wrong. That was about five years ago. I kind of regret it now

I keep my signed 2nd edition copy on the table next to my bed, along with "Fender the Sound Heard Round the World," Tony Bacon's "Electric Guitars the Illustrated Encyclopedia," Tom Wheeler's two guitar books, Gerald Weber's "Desktop Reference of Hip Vintage Guitar Amps." (a copy is on my work bench as well), Bill Carson's, George Fullerton's and Forrest White's books, "The Beatles Anthology," and "Area 51, an Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base," by Annie Jacobson.
That is one damn heavy table.
Don't dally, grab Dalley's book..............I just had to say that.

The best book ever !!!
I bought my copy in the 90s'
Purchased from Wenzel's Records in Downey,CA (where pipeline was originally recorded)
I saved the receipt and it is laminated on the inside corner of the cover.
I keep it in near mint condition. The receipt bares Wenzels name ...FYI no longer in business as most know.
The book is autographed by more than half of the bands featured.
Starting bid is $1000.00
Email me if interested.

No longer in business. Ace bought their catalog. In 2011 - whenever I was there - the building had a Mexican food place in one end and a vacancy in the other end, the final store and recording end, I think.

This third edition is really good. Been into it all morning. More in-depth pix and observations. Very, very nice.
"High water mark," Bob!

There's a great picture in the third edition of Bob Demmon playing a '65ish bound neck Jazzmaster. Wonder if that was a hold over from the Astronauts days.

Not super early as none of the original guitars had painted head stocks. However, Bob commented somewhere that they really liked the Jazzmasters as they were reliable and stayed in tune pretty good.
He put have had it for at least 10 years as it is apparently the same guitar that he was playing in their 1989 reunion video.

Eddie, I'm flattered, but that's more of a question for you or Sonic Chris or Maui Malara. My specialty is that 6 times out of 10 I can tell a Jazzmaster from a Jaguar without help.
Maybe you could compare the pictures with some from a Japanese show or video? I doubt there would be anything from a "late" US show of that vintage.
Chuck Hughes and Lance Bakemeyer have told me that they played some with Rich Fifield not all that long after the Astronauts. But they haven't mentioned Demmon. Chuck really enjoyed SG101 this year and I think he's going to the Winter Surf Show in a few weeks and would be willing to chat with folks there about that near encounter with the Astronauts. Plus he's trying to remember the name of the first surf piece he learned. he remembers how to play it, of course, but the name is gone. It sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it and I forgot to video it when he was running through it on Bob Cannistraro's guitar last summer after the Modernism Show.
I do know where Demmon is buried, but there's no mention of the band, let alone guitars, on the headstone.
