I know there is a thread asking something similiar, but I wanted to know what everyone's opinions are.

you're going to get alof of Jazz bas responses.

Personally I like a P bass.
I need to save up and get one already.

I'm not a bass player, but I like Precisions. I own a sunburst one
from the late 70's that I bought for demos and occasional dire
emergency fill-ins. This beast weighs a freakin' ton, but unlike
most really heavy instruments, sustains for days. I like the necks
better on P-basses than Jazz basses, and it seems like most of
my favorite Fender bass tones have come from Precision basses.
The best bass tone I ever heard is George Porter Jr.'s (the Meters)
P-bass through an Ampeg SVT with 8x10 cab. Wow!!! Deep deep
deep!

(I love the sound of Fender jazz basses too. IMHO, you can't go
wrong with either).

I voted for "other", I prefer the old-style 1951 Fender Precision

My favorite is a Fender Precision. Leo's "less is more" masterpiece that changed and defined the sound of popular music.

I bet that p-bass is so light it practically floats. all stock? what a stunner!

THe NEpTuNeS

Stuff Hits the Fan not a bass player really, but i would prefer mustangs cuz they are lighter and have a shorter scale than jazz or p-basses. now a danelectro longhorn bass looks very cool but they aren't really durable. but i play guitar so what do i know Question Question peace

It's a '65 L-series, see-through blonde ash body - just 8 lbs., and it's all original except for a Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickup and new pots. I have the original PU, but it needs to be rewound.

(Edit: The SD pickup has since been replaced with a Lollar)

I used to be a Jazz Bass guy (still have one), but the A width neck on this bass has the same 1.5" nut width, which makes it equally easy to play and the Precision Bass pickup just has more "guts". The Jazz has a little better definition and clarity sound-wise, but this Precision is smoother and has "that" surf bass sound.

And thanks for the kind words! Very Happy

WoodyJ
a '61 Dual Showman

Woody a Dual for 61'??? hmmm It's a Double Showman right not a Dual? back in 62-63 Fender labled this model "Double Showman" came with a cab 2 x 15"/8 ohms (16 ohms each in parallel) 63' to 66' the blackface was named Dual with and without block letters till 67', give us the juice on your showman this is very intriguing if it's a "Double Showman" then you have the daddy of rare Showmans, your rig would be up there with the rare blonde 2x12 61'-62' Twin combo, what's the date on the output tranny?

Kyle,

Can't see the date stamp (I'll have to pull the back panel), but the tube chart ink stamp is KK which is November, 1961. The chassis # is 00931.

EDIT: Found it...830-1-21

I voted for Precision Bass, as I own two of 'em (Squier Affinity & Fender Standard), and I now own an Epiphone EB3. I don't know if I'd ever get a Fender Jazz Bass, but I do want to buy a Fender Jaguar Bass, sometime in the future. Should I find myself, in the future, playing bass in a band (surf or otherwise), it'll be nice to have the P/J p'ups and active electronics that the Jaguar Bass has to offer.

Yep, it's a feather - just under 8 lbs., and it's all original except for a Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickup. I have the original, but it needs to be rewound.

How are those Antiquity II pickups? I've heard that they are very good.

I own a Jaguar Bass, and it is pretty sweet, but it actually has 2 Jazz Bass pickups, no PJ style configuration. It does have a series parallel switch though, which alot of people say has a convincing P Bass sound.

Favorite? My Blonde babes...a '65 ash body A-neck P-bass through a '61 Dual Showman. Or, Ampzilla if it is a really big venue.

I thought that all Fender basses had alder bodies until the 70's...

The VI as well...

Hey, Shaun,

The Antiquity II's sound great to me...good enough that I'm not going to bother to get the original pickups rewound in the forseeable future. I've had a bunch of P-basses over the years including a '57 (ex-Paul Goddard, Atlanta Rhythm Section) that I still have, and this '65 has "the" surf sound.

I thought that all Fender basses had alder bodies until the 70's...

The see-through blonde ones had ash bodies, alder was used on the other colors, I believe.

Awesome. At one point I was considering getting Antiquity II's for my Jaguar bass, but I've decided on Lindy Fralin pickups. They're both handwound, and vintage sounding, but I can return the Fralin's to get them re-wound for free.

Oh, and I remember that now. Fender uses Ash on see through blonde's because the grain looks very nice on ash bodies.
