Permalink KILLER LUDWIGS ON SHOPGOODWILL.COM

New Topic

Chance to get a great drumset while supporting a great cause instead of a parasitic bloodsucking "vintage dealer". Go to shopgoodwill.com and type in Ludwin. They misspelled the title.

HEY THERE, HI THERE, HO THERE !!!!

Pretty cool!
There's a couple of nice Acrolites on there as well for peanuts.

cheers,
Jeff

Wooffff... those acrolites, like!
Just listen to what Al Jackson did with these guys, love it!
Underrated killer snare for a nice price.

cheers,
Andy

Andy,
Yeah! I got mine cheap and I suck and it STILL sounds real good.
Love it tuned up pretty high and tight.
This weekend I tried the two ribbon mic drum recording "technique" they used at Stax and BAM.........there was THAT sound.
With exception of the playing of course, LOL

Cheers,

Jeff

Hey Jeff,

I know the feeling.. myself, I'm a very very sloppy drummer.
The only vid available me drummin'... it's sloppy and basic, but it is what it is... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmLfL-VWOzU
And it's no Acrolite either, it's a premier royal ace I like a LOT! Snappy, a lot of attack, soulful, .. Premier's very underrated IMO. Check out early Shadows tracks.
To come back to the acrolite... you have some samples? Who love to hear it.
The reissues are very tempting to try out but for some reason I don't get to it.

Cheers,
Andy

Andy,
I'll have to figure out a way to upload the Stax tests I did.
They tell the story best on my Acro.
I also, for good measure put my billfold on the snare for the mic test like Al Jackson used to do.
I got my Acro for $60.00, it's a 70's olive and blue badge.
I used it for this http://surfguitar101.com/downloads/details/631/ but this mix is pretty bad and the drums are kind of mono-ish. The drum actually has more snap to it than this and I did not use the Stax mic positioning for this.
You're much better drummer than I am for sure!
I'm working on my rimshot technique which I'm horrible at but....if I'm going to play surf drums.............

Cheers,
Jeff

As I'm probably going to have to record drums in June, can you please explain this technique, and what tell me what mics you used? Thanks, Jeff!

Noel,
The earlier Stax drum mic positioning was as follows:

1 - RCA 77 Ribbon Microphone placed between the snare and the hi hat, just under the hi hat and about 2 feet or less away from the kit
1 - RCA 44 Ribbon microphone on the kick about 6 inches maybe more away with the mic near center of the front kick head.

I can send pictures BUT

There are better 2 mic techniques to capture drums for your event than this. This gives a very dry and punchy sound but not much cymbals. It also is a mid rangey sound. The drummer has to have a light touch. The Ribbon mics are fragile, very fragile so if you're going to use one on a kick you should use a windscreen and make sure the drummer does not have a lead foot. You could destroy the mic with one hit.

I've got some other recommendations for you when you do that show, mic wise (cheap but good) and positioning if you want and I'll email you those but keep in mind - I'm no professional engineer.

Cheers,
Jeff

Thank you Jeff! That's fascinating. I think in the future I'll direct all these diversionary conversations to my recording thread.

Hey Jeff,

never heard that song of yours before.. seems like a lot of fun, can image the grin on your faces Wink

Interesting info 'bout that mic positioning.
A coincidence... last week I saw a small piece of video about 'the sound of stax', which was maybe 90% Booker T & the MG's backing... but the subject was more about the slightly but natural 'delay' on the drum tracks.
Especially because it wasn't meant to at the time but due to the 'building structure' and positioning of the band.
This being said... I know NOTHING about recording techniques. Laughing
For some reason, I like to hear people talk about it. Some are geniuses and kinda busy with it in an almost scientific way.
Man, the way Pete Curry records his drums... pooooow!

cheers,
Andy

PS: Noel, what are you going to record?
And Jeff, come on, that drum track ain't that bad, is it?!

Andy,
Thanks, you're kind.
Yeah, the cool thing about Ribbon mics is that they are figure 8 pattern so they "hear" from the front and back and thus you get some of the room with the instrument unless there is a baffle blocking the way. That's probably how some of that old movie theatre that Booker T and The MG's recorded in ended up on the tracks.
I as on a mixing session recently (this is drum related, promise) and the drums were a little dead, boring sounding and I suggested to the engineer that he put a little bit of slap back on the drums for excitement, ala 60's sound and he thought I was crazy - and then he tried it and suddenly the drums had some life and snap and "excitement" without sounding all echoy.
Fun stuff.

Cheers,
Jeff

Oh and.....that darn Goodwill in middle Tennessee has too many cool thing on their auction site. I'll pretend I didn't see that, Ha Ha.

ROTFL At least you reminded me to cull that MG's album from the sale lot. ('73, Dunn/Jackson producers, Bobby Manuel on guitar, only played twice, fun stuff.)
