On recordings, has it been the standard to use echo along with reverb? I have a Danelectro Fab Echo pedal that I use to apply just a touch of slapback (<100) with my Frontman25R (with reverb around 8). I like the sound playing my Squier VM Jaguar.
On an unrelated note, I just ordered a Squier VM Jazzmaster, in Olympic White of course. Now I have the matching "set." Oh, nooooooo......has GAS set in?

On your traditional sounding surf recordings, you don't hear a lot of slap back combined with drippy reverb.
Less rare is echo/long delay, really on brilliant display by the Penetrators and anything IvanP has been a part of(Space Cossacks/Madeira). It isn't the only sound those bands go for, but super tasty examples can be found in their music.
And you have the Shadows, who are the impetus behind the attempt of so many surf bands using echo/delay.
Long story short... it isn't standard. Maybe 20% of bands have used echo/delay and a very small number of them use it all the time.

A little slap will help the mini-no-kidding-actual-spring pan in your Frontman 25R, which is actually quite good for an onboard in terms of the role it plays.
Have a VM Jazzmaster also & love it; you're probably gonna really enjoy that one. If you'd like a tweak for those specific pickups on that specific guitar so that you can roll the volume off a touch w/o having the tone drop off the planet shoot me a PM.
