Permalink Just one more, I promise! Surf version of Spanish Dagger

New Topic

Hello again,
It was great to get comments from Surf Nation on the original surf tune I posted awhile ago, and I would just like to make one more request for input from SG101 folks.

The great Big Sandy, of Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys, has a fine song called "Spanish Dagger", and my surf band, the Royal Aces, is doing a surf instrumental version of it (with Big Sandy's permission!).

I would really welcome comments, suggestions, etc. It can be heard on our site at www.myspace.com/theroyalaces
Just scroll down our list of songs til you see "Spanish Dagger".

Thanks a lot! (Gear note: the Strat is a great olympic white 90s Protone, with a Rio Grande Stelly in the bridge, and my tremolo is from a fine little Danelectro trem pedal. The amp is a Music Man 1x12 with a Jensen Neo 12)

I don't think myspace took the whole song, I can only get the first 16 seconds of it.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Thanks, Chris - I'll check that out.

Thanks for that head's up, Chris - it should be playing properly now...

I never heard the original, but it sounds very melodic.

It works now - I just listened to the whole song.

Nice arrangement!

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Thanks, Chris. The Aquasonics had definitely done some nice work on a cover of that tune, too, which gave me some direction on the guitar parts.

I will take credit for thinking the original vocal would make a cool instrumental song, and for the arrangement, but all I did was cop all the cool parts played by Ashley Kingman on the original - and splice it into a 2:30 second song.

You play it nicely - I like the tremolo.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

I am listening right now. I like it. Very relaxing and soothing. Never heard the original, but it's a good tune.

its ok,
I wish it had some rhythm guitar to it,
and the guitar is dark and thick sounding.
a bit more treble would be nice.

Really appreciate the comments, Surf Nation! The observation from Big Sandy himself when he listened to it was "Love it - that made my day. Can't wait to play it for the rest of the band", so, overall, we're feeling cautiously optimistic that we're going in the right direction with it.
Reverb and twang forever...

The Neo 12 seems to be one of the few high-powered speakers that will fit this tight little cab with its OT right in the way of a speaker magnet (what was Leo thinking?). How are you digging the Jensen Neo 12 over the long run?

Squink Out!

The only critical note I would make about the Neo is that it could use a little more bottom end. But the weight trade-off is a beautiful thing.
