I want a driver adequate to my Music Man 112 Sixty-Five, which was designed for an AlNiCo rated at 120 watts.
I'd rather buy from one of you guys than a stranger on ebay; keep it in-house. You guys also know about what sounds good with reverb.

Apologies: It's a Warehouse G12. Found the link: Good luck with eBay. It was getting tough to get bargains on there - now it gets tough to just buy anything! — |

Disregard because I had zero situational awareness & didn't read the full thread title. Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. Last edited: Feb 05, 2015 16:39:34 |

Thanks for the tips, all. Still searching. There is an Altec 417 for sale north of Chicago for $175. I almost bought an EV EVM12L for $150 but missed my appointment due to car crash traffic. Bummer. What do folks think of the Eminence Swamp Thang? do they sound good in openback combos? —Last edited: Feb 06, 2015 13:55:16 |

Probably the most objective assessment I've read came from Bill Machrone, who uses one as his reference speaker on his test bench: "There’s nothing swampy about the Swamp Thang–this is the loudest, cleanest speaker in Eminence’s lineup, but its response is tilted towards the bass side. Eminence calls the treble response moderate, but I find its highs more prominent than the Texas Heat’s. It produces big, round lows, even in the BJr’s small cabinet. The magnet is huge and it will add noticeable weight to your BJr. It might hit an aftermarket, larger output transformer like the Heyboer I use. You can probably spin the baffle 180 degrees to place it at the lower right instead of upper left (from the back) for clearance. I use the Swamp Thang on my test bench because it’s so clean (I want to hear the amp, not the speaker) and the moderate highs keep the ice pick tones out of my ears. The Swamp Thang is not a truly neutral speaker; it adds a warm, woodwind-like undertone." Good luck with the search; there've got to be some desperate people in the metro-hive that will part with a nugget to you for the right price. Only took me 2,632 CL listings to find that EVM-12L (although I guess he's over your budget). Maybe see how long it sits... Have you looked at the Eminence Commonwealth? It's very JBL-like. It looks like an E120. They sound great. —Otto & The Ottomans |

Bob, et.al. Complicating this is the fact speaker mfr specs do not typically include the outside diam. of the magnet assembly. So does anyone have a suggestion for something like the original? —Last edited: Feb 07, 2015 11:26:40 |

That is sad news (but maybe good). "Most early Music Man amps had speaker made by Eminence, typically models with square alnico magnets." So you're brain pan is working OK. But they were made by Eminence; perhaps a call to them would yield some idea of a course of action? —Wes DISCLAIMER: The above is opinion/suggestion only & should not be used for mission planning/navigation, tweaking of instruments, beverage selection, or wardrobe choices. |
