Hello all.. a few years ago i found a '64 Deluxe Reverb in a used guitar shop for $800. a strange turn of events and it ended up in a friends storage locker until now. so now it's back with me and i need to fix it up. i need a speaker for it and i have no idea what a good speaker would be for intro / surf stuff, that works well in a Deluxe amp.
it needs servicing, and i know the previous owner was trying to do some mod,(completely reversible) but the tremolo doesn't work. the guy at the shop told me he was trying to add a master volume... but who knows! everything look original inside... but i'm no expert.
Thanks!

IMO a good speaker choice is an Eminence Texas Heat or Swamp Thang. But that's just my personal taste. Some might prefer Warehouse or Weber speakers, while others prefer JBLs...

Weber 12f150
Light Dope
8ohm 50watts.
Look no further.
Best modern 12" speaker for surf, and absolutely perfect for the Deluxe Reverb.

+1 I've heard that exact speaker in that exact platform and it is pretty tough to beat. Good luck with reclaiming the chassis of that great amp back to its glory.

I put the Weber 12F150 as above in my reissue Deluxe Reverb - sounds good, much better than the original Jensen that it came with. I believe that the Deluxe Reverb is correctly thought to be a more aggressive sounding amp than some of the other Fender's (Twin, Super, ect.) which may or may not suit your tastes in surf.

I actually like Celestion Greenbacks (or Vintage 30) in a Deluxe Reverb. By putting in a higher efficiency speaker you can get a little more clean headroom out of the DR.
I don't agree with it being more agressive than any ot'her Fender amp. W/ JJ 6v6 tubes, it sounds similar to the 6L6 Fenders but at lower volume.
I've been running a Greenback in my DR, and it's currently beating my Bandmaster for my Surf amp of choice. It's small and easy to transport, sounds great (can get loud enough for band volume while staying clean), and has good built in reverb so I don't absolutely have to bring a tank.

I once put an Eminence Commonwealth in a '70 Deluxe Reverb. It sounded fantastic. Very JBL like. It cleaned the amp up a bit with more headroom.

An almost duplicate response in JOBeast's thread:
I read a blog about replacing Fender speakers and it really rated Western speakers. Anybody any experience?

I love the WGS G12C, though didn't get to try one in a DR. Same goes with the Emi CRex. One of these went into my Gries 20 amp (DR inspired, but with better reverb and a MV), where it sounds so fine.
The best vintage DR I've heard is a friend's BF. He put a weber silverbell ceramic in there, and it is something to behold. I would have never guessed that one.

I think too many (online) opinions about speakers, amps and guitar tone are biased towards blues and rock. We are surf guitarists and we desire something different to the blues masses. We ride our own waves.
