Permalink Crate Powerblock + Eminence Swamp Thang = Thumbs Up!

What would be a great price for this? This is a great idea, instead of lugging around my Fender twin reverb to jam in Long Island all the time.

I've had one on my ebay searches for a while, typical price is about $100.

I run the Powerblock through two Celestion 12" speakers: this setup works well for surf guitar+ reverb tank...also works well for keyboard...or even as a medium-volume bass practice amp.

I paid more than $100 but less than $200, I wouldn't say it was a great deal. I've been keeping my eye open for a local one for some time so when this came up on Craigslist I convinced myself that I had to have it.

I think I paid $99 at musician's friend for the Powerblock two years ago: I use the 2x12" Celestion cab for all sorts of musical activities...

I love the Powerblock! I have two!

Be careful following the masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent...........................

It looks like anyone wanting one of these better snatch it up. They were underappreciated while in production. Soon they will be highly sought after.

I'm using mine with an open-backed Mesa 1 X 12 with an EVM 12-L. Great sound; small package-and LOUD! Wouldn't have considered it but for the rave reviews here on SG-101. I won't reveal my settings though. Too many out there seeking that elusive "El Rey" tone. I will require a payment sufficient to finanace my retirement!
Check the pawn shops-that's where I found mine.

Yay, got one as well now!

The ZT Lunchbox amp takes the convenience and power of the Powerblock a step further by including a speaker with its 120 watt RMS ("200 watt") amp. Sometimes I connect an external speaker and leave them both on or shut off the internal speaker. I play plenty of gigs and rehearsals with just the Lunchbox amp and its internal speaker (+ effects pedals).

While I really like my Powerblock and have used it for some concerts, I am a bit sceptical about the Lunchbox because of the small speaker and the simple tone control. Do you have any recordings as examples?

Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin)
"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

I got a power block and keep it in my truck all the time.
I thought it was needed at a gig on fri, but turns out to be a speaker prob, not a amp issue.

The other guitarist in The Insanitizers was so impressed by my ZT Lunchbox tones that he bought one himself. He bought an extension cabinet with a 12" high power speaker but stopped using it. Even when we play bass guitar emulation the Lunchbox sounds great with its own internal speaker. We keep the Lunchbox tone control at 12 o'clock and use pedals to control EQ and other effects.

For recordings I use a different setup.

If you have a Lunchbox as backup it can substitute for speaker problems, not just amp problems.

Mmmh, I'd love to hear some sound samples of the lunchbox.
I've bought the Crate - Powerblock as a backup or go-to amp for sessions, not as a main amp. While the lunchbox is capable of both and especially the latter, I seriously am in doubt regarding the speaker size. Also it is 3 times the price of a Crate - Powerblock. Any chance to hear some live recordings?

There are a couple on YouTube, but the sound was recorded by the internal mics in a $60 Kodak camcorder. Here are the links:

You can see my pair of Lunchbox amps on the right (stage left). One is sitting on a 12" extension speaker cab. The extension speaker for the other is off camera on the left (stage right). Using the extension speakers let the other band members clearly hear what I was playing, without my being too loud. It also dispersed my sound in all directions through the large venue. I had all four speakers on.

Pricewise, on Ebay right now the Crate Powerblock costs more than a ZT Lunchbox used and about the same as a ZT Lunchbox new. I realize that usually the Lunchbox costs a little bit more. Typically a used lunchbox is $180. However, in Germany no doubt the situation is different.

So my Powerblock will arrive today (hopefully). I have some questions though. In mono mode the amp has an impedance of 8ohms and 4ohms in stereo. Power is rated with 150W in mono and 75W in stereo on each side.

  • Can I plug it in to a 4ohm cab in mono mode without damaging the amp or speaker?!
  • Can I plug it in to a 8ohm cab in mono mode equipped with a JBL D130F?

Assuming in both cases that I do not crank it to 11 and play at a moderate volume. Ivan mentioned that he wouldn't plug it into the JBL D130F cab as this might blow the speaker. I really do not play that loud (my BF Bassman is always around 3.5). Thanks guys!

Don't power anything lower than 8 ohms in bridge (mono). The heat from the high currents will trip the protection circuit at an inconvenient moment or even fry the output stage. If you use the JBL, take care not to open up all the way because the speaker can't dissipate that much power for more than a few seconds. Better get another 4 ohm cab and run it in stereo (or double mono).

I also keep a Crate Power Block in the trunk for the case that the ol' Fender dies on me mid-gig. I worry that it will struggle to get to the proper volume when that time comes. Hence, I'm thinking about about a Quilter Tone Block. I know it will power a large cabinet most effectively - and it's smaller and lighter in weight. However, it's significantly more expensive. -Marty

Thanks for the reply. I've looked it up again and came to the conclusion that a solid state amp can handle this mismatch. Will give it a try Wink
Regarding the JBLs I think I simply have to be careful.
Getting another cab is not an option. I own 6 cabs and my main cab is a 8ohm 1x15" Echolette (Showman) cab equipped with a JBL D130F. So in case of emergency I can simply switch to the Powerblock and keep it at a reasonable volume, I guess. But the other cab I'd like to use is a 1x15" Showman cab, equipped with a Eminence (don't recall which one) 4ohm speaker. According to a lot of posts on the net this should not be a problem, but I think the only way to find out is trial an error. Fingers crossed!

Anyone here have an opinion about relative performance of Eminence Swamp Thing in open (e.g. combo) cab vs. closed back? I read from badger that they have a huge low end which might indicate closed.
