I am indecisive about what chain configuration I like better. A boost pedal before a tube driven tank drives the reverb harder and adds a bit more grit which I like but if I run the boost after I can achieve a cleaner sound which I also like. What thoughts do you guys have about the signal chain and where you put a boost pedal if you use one?

Once upon a time, I used boost pedals. Then I realized they are pointless as my guitar has a volume knob which sounds much better.

I run it after as make-up gain for the tank. The tank lowers the gain (output from the tank isn't full volume)

Depends! I rather like an overdriven spring reverb sound. Not very "surf" though. Too much grit for that sort of thing.

I use a boost as an always on pedal to add a bit more girth to the tone and the volume knob to control just that. It does add some more balls to the sound.

Makes sense to me. This is how I have been running my signal chain...just getting other's perspective.

Yes, why not both?
I run an OD Pedal in front and one after the tank. so you can use both sounds, a louder signal to the amp with a cleaner reverb or push the reverb to get some more dirt in the tone. Both sounds cool for certain purposes.

Always before for me. Only engage it to get that real gritty sound (DD) at a very moderate volume.

i use a early 90' tube screamer before the tank, for some Tunes sounds great.

I use an EP Booster version 1 that have running about 3:00. I like the extra punch that it gives to the front end of the amp. I use other drive pedals, a Flashback Mini for rockabilly slap, a TS808HW for bite, and a Black Arts Black Forest overdriver for some vintage fuzzdrive. After all those pedals goes the RI Fender tank, then amp. I play some original instro, Link Wray, aforementioned rockabilly and boogie woogie and first wave surf covers.
I usually do not have any drive going when my tank is on but that EP Booster is always on.

Curious, anyone ever simply run a little 5 or 6-band GEQ between the tank & the amp to accomplish the same function? I've got pickups that I'm happy with in all 3 positions on the Strat now and am going to start playing around with moving the signal chain around a bit just to see what happens. (There's a Dunlop EP, a TS-based OD, and a 6-band to play with.)
Trivia: I have a pic of DD's Showman with his Fulltone OCD sitting on top of it. Can't verify patching from the pic but believe it was between tank & the amp, presumably to add some grit when he only turns up to 8(?).

I took a pic of the OCD when I was on the stage watching DD but never saw the light on. Don't know if he was using it with a burned out light or it was just in the signal chain for whatever reason.

Yeah, can't say for sure either. Nothing was on at that time, between shows & The Revomatics had just cleared. Once he walked in the room it became of little consequence anyway.

The OCD is true bypass which made me really curious as to why it was in the signal chain and didn't appear to be on. Maybe it was on but the led was removed???

Never know; maybe he didn't use it that night, was there just in case. Maybe it's got a busted light. As he mentioned to the crowd during a lull after the kick-drum pedal assembly broke (tech had spare almost in-hand, took all of 3 minutes), "Hey, we play hard so shit breaks."

I run my reverb unit in a loop on the Boss LS-2. It provides level adjustment post-effect so I can match the reverb level with the bypass level. I don't use my reverb unit for everything and sometimes want to take the tubes out of my signal path.

I thought about the flak I would catch with such a notion.
